Can't Log in - DNS errors?

Says "can't resolve host name."

So I contacted concierge. They said it was my ISP (Charter Cable).

But - I can get on the internet fine, so how could it be Charter?

Hard to say. I would reboot my router/modem and see how you go. Can't hurt to reboot the PC either. If that doesn't help I would contact your ISP and they can examine the situation for you.

My Mood:

Something to try:

Open up a command window (assuming you're using windows) --

Start - run, type in CMD and press enter.

Then, in order at the command prompt:

ipconfig /release
ipconfig /flush dns
ipconfig /renew

Well, I called Charter and got the recorded message that says, "We are aware there is a service outage in your area."

So I'm going to assume that's it. But it's weird, cause I can get internet and TV fine - just not SL!

The concierge person said it would be a problem with their DNS server.

Not sure what that is, or why it wouldn't affect anything else - like websites.

(Whenever I've gotten that message before, it's cause the whole internet is out.)

But I guess I'm going to assume that's it until tomorrow. If it's still that way tomorrow, I will try some of the ideas you've given me. Thanks, guys!

A DNS server stores a list of the "where to go" IPs when you give a URL. It is possible that the ISP's DNS server lost access to part of its database. In short it has no idea where agni.lindenlab.com is but it probably still has access to the IP numbers of the other places you go.

If you know how you can try changing your DNS host to OpenDNS. OpenDNS | Providing A Safer And Faster Internet

I can log in today!

Thanks for the explanation, Aodhan. I didn't realize they would have a database of addresses. I was thinking you just sort of automatically went to them, using the ISP just as a way to "connect."

This is the first time this has ever happened. Previously, when it said host could not be found, the entire internet couldn't be found, and like as not, the TV would be off, too.

You're welcome, and good that things are working now.

The internet is crazy (and vulnerable) in that way, that's why the recent DNS exploit thing was handled in total secrecy for 6 months, and by the time it was made public, the fixes were already deployed.
