.docx .xlsx - WTF

What was the point? Why did MS do this? Just another useless download XP and earlier users have to look for now. What was wrong with .doc files?

I don't know, I set 2007 to save automatically to the 2003 format anyway.

It's pretty irritating, especially that it's not backwards compatible, but I know the new format provides expanded features (different types of formatting in Excel for example) but I would rather larger compatibility.

It is a new format for Microsoft Office 2007. You can open these document types just fine in previous Office version by installing the Office 2007 Compatibility Pack found here:

Download details: Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats

Enjoy!

Regards,

-Flip

.docx is an XML based file format, instead of binary as in previous versions, making it easier to process by other applications.

You can download a plugin from MS so that 2003 reads 2007 files seamlessly.

I have Vista with Office 2007 so I am set. But if I hear one more person in my office yell out "I cant open this file my client sent me" I am going to kick them.

I sent everyone the link to the patch, they are just lazy or did not bother reading the email. Thank you for explaining why the did this for me though. At least now I know there was a reason and not just MS being MS.

Why won't that file you sent me open?
