Smile Windows Could Use a Rush of Fresh Air

MICROSOFT Windows has put on a lot of weight over the years.
Beginning as a thin veneer for older software code, it has become an obese monolith built on an ancient frame. Adding features, plugging security holes, fixing bugs, fixing the fixes that never worked properly, all while maintaining compatibility with older software and hardware — is there anything Windows doesn’t try to do?

Painfully visible are the inherent design deficiencies of a foundation that was never intended to support such weight. Windows seems to move an inch for every time that Mac OS X or Linux laps it.

The best solution to the multiple woes of Windows is starting over. Completely. Now.

So just like Apple used the BSD Kernel maybe this new Windows could use the Linux kernel?

I just got a brand new Dell XPS - but the day I can afford a Mac again is the day I leave PCs behind. The primary reason I have not tried to get a Mac is because ALL I do is internet & SL, and right now Macs are not too SL friendly.

Once I get an XBox 360 and a HD TV I can leave PC gaming behind and with that I can abandon Windows.

I am considering Apple as one alternative, Linux as the other.

My main problem with Apple is that they made the iPod/iPhone/iTunes/iFuckedyourmom/and a whole slew of other i products that are all overrated, full of DRM, and overpriced (including iTunes - since out of 99 cents, the artist only gets 5 cents, IF THEY'RE LUCKY)

Can an XBOX 360 really compete with a PC from a performance POV? I know I'm not the only one here waiting for the PC version of GTA:IV simply because we can run it on far superior hardware than that available in any console right now.

The day I switch to a computer that wants to continually hold my hand, and is loaded with proprietary components that cost a fortune to repair/replace, is the day I give up on computing altogether.
