Question [SOLVED] Round does not look round enough

May I have some assistance, please?

ISSUE:
In SL, things that are round are not round enough. They look hexagonal-ish and I HATE it.

NOTES:
I've been googling this problem for quite a while and I can't find a solution. Might be because I'm not familiar with the technical terminology needed to search more efficiently.

Here's an example, note the camera lens.

(True, I'm holding it wrong, I'll solve that problem later.)

I have all gfx settings maxed in the SL Client with the exception of draw distance. The issue continues no matter what I pick for draw distance, however.

System:

Win 7 Professional 64-bit
MSI Nvidia GTX 560ti
NVidia driver version 301.42 - WHQL
ASUS P5QL PRO / 8 Gb RAM / Intel Core Quad Q8200 2.8 ghz oclocked

Any suggestions? Thank you in advance.

Might be good to say what viewer you're using. it looks to me like it's LODed quite a bit. This shouldn't happen if you have everything maxed in settings, so i'm wondering if it's some incompatibility between your viewer and your system.

Also I have heard the 560 has some of the worst peformance with SL, for some reason. Lots of JIRAs about it.

Smile SOLUTION

Thank you Darien! You put me on the path I needed. The search term I had needed was: LOD

Thank you also to eku for the tidbit on wombats. That was an interesting diversion.

Anyway, the configuration for the parameter RenderVolumeLODFactor, despite my setting all sliders to max, still used a punishing and sadistically low number: 1. Changing this from 1 to 5 solved the rendering problem. Really stupid that I have to use debug mode to fix this, but meh.

Though the information I found pertained to sculpties, it turns out that this very value affects old school primitive volumes.

Instructions (quoted from this SOURCE)

Debugging your LOD settings is something that will force all your sculpties to keep their correct shape. This is how to do it:

1. Show the “Advanced” menu with Ctrl-Alt-D, or Opt-Ctrl-D on a Mac (top bar of your viewer).
2. Select “debug settings” from the drop down menu (almost at the bottom).
3. A new small window will pop up.
4. In the blank space, copy and paste the word:

RenderVolumeLODFactor

5. The preferences slider range sets this value between 0 and 2, set it to 4-5 here to get all your prims looking great. Then close the window.

NOTE: Unlike increasing your draw distance, this will NOT create much more lag for yourself or none for those around you! And it will improve the look of all objects.

That's interesting, Even LL defaults that value between 1.5 and 2.0 depending on the viewer version. I wonder how it got to be 1.0

Well, if it's true that the default should have been higher than 1.0... then my guess is that this stems from having a much less powerful graphics card on this same install of Windows just after I first installed the OS on the machine. That setting likely inherited.

I hope this solution helps others, because it was such a pain for which to hunt.

That's been my experience. Back when I installed the 9500 I had to change lots of things manually and again with the 250, though less difference that time.

Careful about forcing those higher volume values. Once you hit a public, dense area in SL, that high setting will murder your framerate.
