I need some advice: Inspired vs. Copy

I have a few ideas in mind for photos lately, but I'm nervous. I don't want to get in any trouble, nor do I want to bring on any "OMG you are copying" haters. Obviously people get inspired all over the place, but how far is too far?

For example, since the passing of Ray Bradbury I've been wanting to do a Farenheit 451 shoot. I was thinking of putting together a Clarisse look and have her rest against a red door with the 451 on it.

Sure, now you are all going to steal my idea! I'm kidding

My problem is I want to make this red door in SL. Not that I can make it, I haven't graduated from plywood cubes yet, but I'd like to try. It seems a fairly straight forward learn-to-build project.

I could find a red door or red door texture and put numbers on it, I guess, I don't think that's copying. But if I somehow use the actual image of the door they used in the movie promos, is that wrong/illegal/cheating?

Now texture aside, what about the rules or ethics about imitating photos in general?
Lately I've been spending a lot of time looking at Greg Kadel photos and I'm inspired to try and create SL versions of some of them. Too much?

Other artists in SL have created new things inspired by pre-existing art. Here's one I thought of right away:

I'm also not sure what the actual rules are. I've been holding off a particular photo because it's also inspired by a movie...a horror one.

Is that classified fan fiction, even if the elements are nearly as similar as possible or is it 'theft'? Even though it's done through picture and not actual builds per say?

I'm glad you asked Pancake!

I think its pretty much an aspect of fan art or fan fiction as long as you aren't trying to make a profit off of it.
