Question Windows 7 Help

If you have upgraded to Windows 7 or are planning to and have questions about it, post them here. I've been using it since the first beta as my primary OS, so by now I have pretty extensive experience with it. If you are used to Vista, it is not a huge jump (though the new, much improved task bar is an adjustment). Coming from XP is a different story - bigger learning curve. The two most common questions I see so far is will SL run fine on Windows 7, and should you get the 32 or 64 bit versions...

SL runs fine on Windows 7

As far as the 32 or 64 bit version, it depends. If you have a 64 bit processor and 4 gigs of ram, I would definitely recommend it. If you have 3 gigs or less of ram, or an older processor, then stick with the 32 bit. Note that you cannot upgrade from 32 bit Vista to 64 bit Windows 7 - you have to do a clean install (a good idea anyway).

So, you want people to pay you L$ in SL to ask questions? Instead of getting questions answered here for free?

Yeah, good luck with that.

Sounds like a bad business decision. Free help is available all over the net for Win 7 . . . and it'll become more prolific over the next few weeks. You didn't send a cease and desist to CNET, did you?

And, unless you were joking, your egocentric demand is quite unreasonable. Not a good way to make friends . . . or influence people.

I think one big problem is with the definition of "here". Here is not where you think it is, and it is not owned by you so it is out of your control.

Well, how about an actual Win 7 question?

Since I upgraded to Win 7 I have been having applications switch out or switch to desktop. Not often. It seems to happen around once for every 3-4 hours of system use and has never happened while typing.

Any ideas?

Since I upgraded my lappy to Windows 7 I have had two blue screens of death (something I have not seen since windows 98). It only happens when I lift the lid having let the machine go into sleep mode (by shutting the lid). I rarely actually shut it down so it is prolly down to my abuse rather than the OS being flaky. It's not a major problem in that it is a simple enough thing to restart the machine when it happens and it never fails to restart. Vista never had that problem tho.

I would not even have mentioned it except that having been told not to ask for support I suddenly feel compelled so to do

Keep an eye on where your mouse cursor is. One common Win7 behaviour is to bring whatever you're mousing over on the taskbar to the front. Blank desktop is on the furthest right side of the bar. (^_^)

I haven't looked for the option to turn that off, it hasn't caused enough headaches for me to focus on it. (^_^)y

No, I have not - in fact, it fixed some quirks I had on each machine during the RC. On one of my laptops, it would lock up half the time when I right clicked to bring up a context menu on something in explorer - I would have to kill the process and restart explorer, then it would be fine. On my other laptop, my programs menu was blank. Both resolved. Are you having any problems?

I haven't gotten the regular version yet and I was just seeing if anybody has had any problems with it.

Oh, also, picked up Win 7 Pro-64 a couple weeks back. Running like a dream for me, though my father has been having regular explorer.exe process crashes off of a clean install in both 32- and 64-bit editions.

I suspect an incompatible driver (as the problem does not exist in XP or Vista), but he's blaming hardware, as he always loves an excuse to buy the newest and greatest hardware for his Super Extreme TurboTax sessions

My crashes in explorer turned out to be an incompatability with the Toshiba Bluetooth software. It added something to the context menu to allow you to send a file by Bluetooth, and it would lock up or crash explorer half the time. I downloaded a utility that lets you edit your context menus and I removed it, and the problem was solved.

If it's a Tosh, I'd look into what Cris said. Also worth noting is that many Toshiba Satellite laptops come with a bluetooth driver installed even when they don't have bluetooth hardware and you can just uninstall it via Add/Remove programs if that's the case.

Otherwise, keep a digital camera at hand whenever you're about to wake-up the laptop. If the blue screen appears, snap it & post here.

So I took the plunge and installed Windows 7 recently, upgrading from Vista. I was forced to "upgrade" from Windows Mail and Calendar to Windows Live Mail and Calendar. The import process was smooth enough, but wow. They're total crap.

Get this: the Calendar application is incapable of popping up an event alarm. Instead, you have to go to the Windows Live website and get it to send alerts via SMS, email, or Messenger. Except you don't get Messenger alerts if you're afk for a bit. How hard is it to pop up a dialog on the screen?

As for mail, it handles each mail account in a different set of folders, which seems like a good idea until you realize that you have to empty a Junk Mail folder and a Deleted items folder for every single one. As well, every email shows a the little paper-click "attachment" icon, whether or not it has an attachment.

Really Microsoft? Is it that hard to do a simple mail and calendar app? Windows Vista Mail and Calendar both worked fairly well. Why did they ditch them?

So now I have to decide whether to tough it out or move my email database to Thunderbird, which I find clunky and irritating. Are there any other (free) mail/calendar options out there for Windows 7, or am I stuck?

Um, Cubey - right click on Quick Views and choose Select Quick Views. You can add All Inbox and All Junk Mail.

Also, as far as the attachment icon, I'm not sure what you are talking about - my emails with attachments show the little paper clip, but emails without them do not.

You can set it to delete mail on exit. Click the icon next to ? and choose Options, then Advanced--->Maintenance.
