System issues and crashes with SL, need advice on upgrade

I have a laptop that I use for SL most of the time, but I'd like to start using my desktop because it is a more powerful system. Unfortunately, everytime I try to use my desktop to connect to SL, either the viewer crashes, the computer freezes, or I'll get the infamous BSOD.

Here is the specs for the Desktop. It is an HP that has not been upgraded (yet) that I bought when Circuit City was going out of business.
  • AMD Phenom(tm) 9650 Quad-Core Processor at 2310 MHz (x4)
  • Windows Vista Home Premium x64 Edition 6.0 (build: 6002) Service Pack 2
  • 7GB RAM
  • NVIDIA GeForce 6150SE nForce430 (Integrated RAMDAC)
Total Graphic Memory: 2159MB (128MB Dedicated Video)
  • Not sure on sound, but it tells me RealTek High Definition Audio. Most likely it is an integrated sound card.
I prefer Emerald and would like to use the Ultra graphics settings. I'm considering upgrading to Windows 7 x64 and getting a new graphics card. Not sure I need a sound card at this point. Anyone have any suggestions on how I can get my desktop working best for SL?

Sansarya has the same onboard 6150SE, and she is able to have a fairly good SL experience, but she does crash pretty regularly using the Greenlife Emerald viewer. (Not sure how that compares to her experience with other viewers.)

I agree that upgrading to a dedicated video card will help. Everything else about your system sounds great.

I have an onboard 7100 and get marginally better performance than she does. Looking forward to the purchase of shiny new video cards next month.

Sound problem with vista

I had the same problem, I found the following solution at http://www.noaudiooutput.com

Find the latest version of your driver, download it, uninstall your current driver and install the new one. After uninstalling the driver and reboot it to automatically reinstall it, the audio still may not work. Amazingly though, sometimes after putting the system in hibernate mode and coming back, the audio worked.

Hope it helps if it doesn't they have other suggestions.

My problem was video not sound.

After recommendation at the main forums, I bought a PNY Nvidia GeForce 9800GT on my way home from work today. Checked my computer power supply and discovered it was only 300W and I need at least 400W to use this card. Fortunately, I haven't opened the box yet, so I'm going to have to return it tomorrow. Maybe with my next paycheck I'll get both the video card and the power supply from Newegg. Just disappointed that I'm going to have to wait longer to get my desktop upgraded. At least I can still use my laptop for SL.

In the meantime, if anyone has any other suggestions, please let me know. Want to make sure I get the right thing.
