SL on Windows 7?

I am currently using Vista Ultimate with mixed feelings about it but I can upgrade to Windows 7. Should I? Will Second Life run OK under 7? How about World of Warcraft? Any general opinions about it?

I have been using Windows 7 as my primary OS for the past 6 months - and I have the final release installed now. I would definitely recommend the upgrade - it is faster than Vista, uses less resources, and is a fantastic OS to use. I could not go back to Vista, and I actually liked Vista. SL and WoW run perfectly fine with it.

I still think I'm a XP fanboy or something, Win 7 SL is WAY better than on Vista, but if you compare the frames rate with XP, you'll notice the diference, if you have 60 fps on Win XP, you'll have 40 on 7, and proly 5 on Visa **lols**

Actually, my framerate in DirectX based games was a bit slower & stuttery on Windows 7 (beta) compared to Vista, but people's mileage will always vary because we all have different hardware configurations. Besides which, DirectX issues won't be mirrored in SL because it uses OpenGL.

I reverted to Vista on my main desktop PC for that reason, but have upgraded my laptops to Windows 7 because I don't use them for gaming.

Does this hold true for those of us that disable the stupid "Aero" crap?

I agree.. honestly, 7 is to Vista, what Win 98 was to Win 95. It's all the good stuff, and better.

I liked Vista, but I'm much happier with 7. even if I did have a couple of bumps along the way. *cough*formatted*hd*and*lost*subscription*database *cough*

I have the Aero turned on and get better FPS in Windows 7 than I ever got in XP. Windows 7 is way more stable and efficient than XP. I recommend making the upgrade to Win 7.

I've run SL SnowGlobe latest test builds and Emerald on Windows 7 beta, Windows 7 RC and now Windows 7 Ultimate on a Core2 Duo 3GHz with 2 GB RAM and an NVidia 9800GT ... no issues.

I'd say that's pretty subjective and more in the line of a self fulfilling prophecy. I've tried Win7 and I went back to XP, still have to find a real reason why it would be better. It's slower than XP but eats 10x of its space. And I can not completely disable the cleartype font rendering.

This really depends--I suspect--upon what you are running.

With Win 7 x64 and dual monitor SLI working for me, my frame rates went in the other direction from yours, nearly doubling what I was previously getting

Frame rate experience:
XP = 15 to 20
Vista = 10 to (Didn't stay on long enough to care)
Win7 20 to 24. (And even better since I got that 295) (^_^)

Multiple clients at once (Low graphics):
XP = 4 to eventual crash
Vista = can't launch 2nd client window without crashing
Win7 = 6 and still had plenty of FPS to walk around, chat, and take screenshots. (^_^)

Stability:
XP = Probably a BSOD per 3 or 4 months. SL dies in long term large crowds. Sound problems after running multiple clients.
Vista = Only ran for 2 months before going back to XP. Stable, but, only time would tell. SL was also the most crashy.
Win7 = See comments about being able to run 6 clients above. (^_^)y

You run 6 clients simultaneously? I can't imagine why. I do run two clients from time to time - makes it easier to check perms with an alt when I'm boxing up new products.

I've never run SL on XP, so I can't speak to that. On my Vista machine I can do two clients at once as stated - though usually it's in my skybox at 1000+ meters, so it's a low lag area to begin with.

My new Windows 7 machine was originally due to be delivered today (Monday, Nov 9th). But I got an e-mail from Dell last week telling me that delivery would be pushed back to Nov 16th. I'm guessing that there was a huge backlog of people waiting for Windows 7 and a tsunami of orders washed over the big computer companies after it was released. I ordered mine about 3 days after the big release myself.

I can't wait!

Point taken.

I noticed you use the Cool Viewer - how do you like that one? I haven't tried it yet.

Also, it looked like you had 6 instances of Cool Viewer running at the same time. I didn't even know that was possible. (Granted, what I don't know about SL would fill most of the books written about it.)

I have five different viewers loaded on my Vista box atm - Imprudence, Hippo OpenSim, Emerald, Snowglobe, and the latest Linden viewer. One of the advantages is that I can have them all set up for different characters with the names remembered - I just have to enter the password to login. So when I want to run two viewers I just fire up two of them, the combo depending on which characters I need at that time.

Cool Viewer remains my personal favorite. I've given Emerald a chance, but, found a few too many hiccups that I'm simply not willing to tolerate. (^_^)

CV offers pretty much the best FPS of all clients I've tried, I prefer the pre-voice UI, and the additions it has are just what I need to maximize my SL enjoyment. (^_^)y

Experience with computers is always subjective because besides the hardware configuration we all set our systems up differently. I disagree with the "self fulfilling prophecy" knock because I always liked XP and never liked Vista ... on ANY machine I tried it on. You say Win 7 takes up 10x the space? I see you enjoy hyperbole. In fact my Win 7 Ultimate takes up almost exactly the same HDD space as my Win XP Professional did. I'm glad you're happy with XP ... I'm sure you'll be very happy together.

Well...

I updated to Windows 7 Ultimate and there seem to be problems...

WoW lost the correct icons and simply won't run. The OS can't access any of the files in the WoW folder.

SL says the video drivers I have can't be used so it won't run either.

All the audio and video files I have aren't linked to a specific app anymore but I can re-link them when I try to run them.

So let's just say I am feeling "mixed" about Win7 so far.

Did you install over the top of existing Windows? That never goes well, in my experience.

I did an update rather than formatting an HD and reinstalling everything.

I just updated my Nvidia graphics driver even though it had the same version number as the one already there and now SL is running great. Looks like I am getting 5-10 more fps than I used to get.

That's what I've heard, which is why I ordered a brand new Windows 7 box, despite my Vista machine being only about 18 months old. It will be nice to have two machines with high end video cards capable of handling SL and Runescape in High Detail mode anyway.

I never do a straight upgrade of the OS. I always back everything up and reformat. I've had too many bad experiences in the past.

I'm currently running Vista Ultimate on my laptop and have run two viewers at the same time. Considering upgrading that to Windows 7 Ultimate. I have upgraded my desktop to Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit, and love it. Only problem I have is unrelated to the OS, and that is the system itself has some stability issues possibly related to bad hardware that I haven't been able to pinpoint yet.

Looks like they're locked folders. Try setting yourself up in Win 7 as an/the administrator. Don't ask me how to do that, I did it but can't remember off the top of my head and I'm not at home right now to check.
