Say it aint so....

OK.. Im pissed. ;P
First off. I have been running SL on my lappy for about 6 months now with no issues. Well, ok Ill be honest, there have been *some* issues, mostly just slow (Usually 5-7 FPS is all I usually get) but livable.
Lately, in the past few days I have been having internet connectivity problems with my wireless, so I decided to try my desk top.
Now here comes the fun part.
My desktop is a Compaq persario running XP. It has everything it needs to run SL except for the shitty GFX card. Its got a ATI raedon xpress 200 in it. Now i know that this is below what it needs. SO I tried updating. WEnt to the ATI webiste and downloaded the update. I also even tried using the Omega drivers.. still nothing.
I can get online, my FPS starts out at about 10 FPS and then after about 5 minutes it drops to 1.5 and then eventually just crashes out entirely.
Sometimes I cant even get in world at all.
My question is. Am I screwed? Or is there SOMETHING i can do to make this work without having to throw money at an old computer?
Its like a 2005 windows media something or other... and everything else works fine but SL.
Can anoyone PLEASE help me? I am so not ready to end my SL life just yet.

You can get a perfectly good GFX card for less than $30 that will blow your mind.

What's the exact model of your computer? If it's anything sane it'll have a 16x PCI-E slot and handle something like this:

Newegg.com - SPARKLE SX94GT512D2L-NM GeForce 9400 GT 512MB 128-bit DDR2 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready Low Profile Video Card - Desktop Graphics / Video Cards

OK, it's $35.00, close enough.

Edit: the previous generation of the same card:

SPARKLE SFPX84GS256U2LF GeForce 8400 GS 256MB 64-bit DDR2 PCI Express x16 HDCP Ready Low Profile Ready Video Card - Retail

That's $25.00, but has less RAM and will probably run a bit slower and hotter.

I have found a GFX card for about 70 bux. But Im not even sure if my system has the requirements to even run it.
It says the requirements are for a AMD 3800+.. that means F all to me. I know I have a AMD64...
Told you i was computer stupid..;P

@Akasha
For SL stay away from ATI and Intel graphics. Any not-stoneage Nvidia card will do fine. You could try to get an 8600GT or 8800/9800GT second hand, they will make a difference like night and day.
