lost curser

I cleaned my computer and no longer have a cursor . I've tried changing batteries in the mouse and I also tried using a different (wired) mouse, The computer boots but no cursor.

I 'm guessing I maybe deleted the driver?

Is there a cmd prompt way to regain the cursor or will I need to get a friend to download something to a disc in order to "put the cursor back in the computer>?

[I'm using a public library computer at the moment so I may take a day or to to get back to respond]

-Thanks

Sounds like the cleaner you used was too strong. You can try painting it back on with White Out. It won't move but at least it will look good if you have house guests over.

Is your mouse USB, or PS2?

If it's USB, try moving it to a different USB port.

If it's PS2... ... Try using a USB Mouse.

(Also note that PS2 mice will not work if plugged in after the computer has been powered on, or if disconnected and reconnected while powered)

I had something similar happen recently. It was time to replace the mouse.

This was on a laptop with touchscreen and the cursor would go nuts. Nothing short of shutting the mouse off completely until it calmed down would fix it and it just kept getting worse. So, new mouse. Problem solved.

What exactly do you mean by "no cursor" - I mean, like where? Do you boot up into the BIOS/UEFI, or do you use an operating system and you're unable to get a cursor anywhere in that?

ETA: When you say "no cursor" do you mean "no mouse pointer"?

The cursor is the pointer Koda.

cur·sor

  • a movable indicator on a computer screen identifying the point that will be affected by input from the user, for example showing where typed text will be inserted.

Try something like this.

https://dottech.org/13949/how-to-fin...-have-lost-it/

Now it may be difficult without a mouse, but you can open the Windows menu with the Windows key, then type "Mouse. Then navigate around with the arrow keys (for tabs at the top) or the Tab key to switch between items in the box. Then select the checkbox with the space bar.

It does sound like the mouse may have died and isn't being recognized anymore. There are a couple of ways to confirm that: Try another mouse, or, if that's not possible, boot up a Linux live CD and see if you get a mouse pointer there.

More likely a hardware issue. even without the manufacturer's drivers, the basic mouse driver built into Windows will give basic function for most devices.

If he did too good a job of cleaning, he might have manged to scramble the usb drivers, which are sort of fragile in Windows 10 to begin with.

Todays lesson: "make a system restore point before cleaning."

Here's how to recover from a restore point:

That's not the mouse pointer, that's the blinking vertical bar in a text entry box.

It says "for example showing where typed text will be inserted". The mouse pointer is also called the cursor and has been for well over 20 years that I know of.

Microsoft sometimes calls the pointer a cursor, but they're inconsistent and it's not a good name for it. A cursor is something that runs along a line (like the cursor on a slide rule, which had the name well before there were computers). The two-dimensional analog of a cursor is a reticle or crosshairs, and originally that's what computer interfaces used before the mouse pointer was invented.

But it seems this will have to be another word lost to the masses, like "hacker". "Mouse cursor" gets twice the hits of "mouse pointer". Bleagh. (waves cane at whipper-snappers)

If you think about it, it's not even really a mouse.

Try googling just "cursor" without the quotation marks.

Or maybe better not. That's how I got the definition on the first hit.

And just fyi I've never used the term/phrase "mouse cursor", it's always just been cursor... unless I was instructing someone who didn't know anything about computers in the first place.

FWIW, the way I learned it in computer class in school, a cursor is

Although it looks like since the definition of "cursor" has drifted, the new term insertion point was recently invented to describe the blinking bar.

There wasn't any such thing as a home computer when I was in school so I've had to learn everything the hard way, on my own, including DOS commands. Those thick, heavy manuals... pcs don't even come with them any more, brand new out of the box pcs that is.

I never heard of a pointer until Argent pointed it out.
Here in the Netherlands you have a cursor, and that's it. (That is, if you don't polish the computer to firmly, as Robert did.)

You guys ..........

I'm glad we got the curser/cursor/pointer controversy sorted, but a cursory examination of this thread leads me to suspect our friend Robert may not have been particularly helped by this otherwise entertaining discussion, and that he remains curserless, cursorless, and pointerless -- but is probably cursing a blue streak by now.

So has Robert found his cursor or mouse pointer?

(I think the term should be "mouse pointer" since as I type this reply I can see both the cursor (flashing vertical line) at the text entry point and the mouse pointer (I-bar, not flashing) floating where I left it, out the way).

Adeon's suggestion seemed to be the best bet. Robert said one of his mice (the one he cleaned) was wireless; so I would recommend moving its USB Bluetooth-receiver-stub-thing to a different USB slot and seeing if that works. Maybe there is a button on the mouse that needs to be pressed or held for a short time to make the mouse discoverable. Or maybe recheck the batteries you put in the mouse. Maybe there's a switch or something in the battery compartment that got moved.
