The Official 2017 MLB Thread

Here's something you probably haven't heard before. The defending World Champion Chicago Cubs are favorites to win it all again this year.....

That's the bad news.

The good news is, there hasn't been a repeat champion since the 98', 99' and 00 Yanks. So I think the Cubblestone road will be a bit bumpy....

Also, the Indians forgot how to run....

and the Orioles seem to have a few attendance issues

The umpires aren't quite at the top of their game yet.

They are not taking this season seriously down at the Trop

Not to mention the Blue Jays haven't broken in their gloves yet

Detroit may have some issues behind the plate

even the camera crews are in pretty rough shape this spring

So let's settle in and get ready for another great season and the Yankees 28th World Series title.....

Not so fast, Chicago. It's payback time...

Thanks for reminding me though, time to change the avatar.

Opening Day is here again. For at least 1 day, every team is in first place. Every fan of every team has hope. Except the Phillies and the Braves, they have no hope....

Fearless playoff predictions - Just so you guys can laugh at me if/when October rolls around.

NL East - NY Mets (3)

NL Central - Chicago Cubs (1)

NL West - SF Giants (2)

WC1 - St. Louis Cardinals (4)

WC2 - Colorado Rockies (5)

_____________

AL East - NY Yankees (3)

AL Central - Cleveland Indians (1)

AL West - Houston Astros (2)

WC1 - Boston Red Sux (4)

WC2 - Texas Rangers (5)

So, there ya have it. What say you baseball fans??

When you're down by one in the ninth and your shortstop decides to hit his very first grand slam:

Swept our series with Texas with that hit. Cleveland actually went into the ninth two-down, I thought the game was going to be their first loss. Nope!

So far there's been a couple of early surprises, especially in the NL. If the season ended today, the Reds and Brewers would both be in the playoffs....

In the AL, the Indians are in last place. So, there's that....

The Tribe are on a roll right now. Those guys haven't given up a run in the last 23 innings. Two straight shutouts and won 5 in a row overall. I don't see anyone in that division ready to hang with them

Top of the 9th, Cubs lead 2 to 0, 2 outs, 2 on and a 2-2 count to Brett "the jet" Gardner. I was just about ready to switch the channel and go put a dollar in the swear jar when this happened....

Brett Gardner's homer powers Yanks past Cubs | MLB.com

Now I owe the swear jar 3 dollars but I think it was money well spent.

Just about a third of the way through the season so far. Champions are evolving. See if you can pick them out....

Bonus points if you can find the 4th highest payroll in baseball flirting with .500

If anyone had told me before the season started that the Milwaukee Brewers would be leading the NL Central after 60+ games and that the Cubs would be below .500, I would have suggested they stop snorting their meds.

But as you can see, that's exactly what's happening. 2017 MLB Regular Season Standings Major League Baseball

Also, Houston is on pace to win about 109 games this year and 40% of their starting rotation is on the DL.

Fun Fact - The Yankees are currently on a 6 game winning streak. The first 5 games of the streak were against rivals Boston and Baltimore. The combined score from those 5 games was 55 to 9. Good things are happening in the Bronx....

Cleveland just won a 15th straight game, which breaks their franchise record of 14, set last year. Which is neat; but more importantly, look at that run disparity.

19 games in a row, now. That's a lot of games in a row.

Cleveland has hit 39 home runs during this streak, scoring 132 runs total and allowing opponents to score only 32.

This has been an impressive run by any standard and they are very close to rewriting a couple of seldom visited history books. The MLB record* is 26. In order for the Indians to surpass that mark they need to win the next 2 at home against Detroit. Then sweep the next 4 at home against Kansas City and finally travel to LA and beat the Angels in the 1st 2 games of that series.

I'd like to see them reach 26+. I don't think they will, but it would be cool to see. I just think KC will get 1 of those four this weekend.

*= Somewhere during the 1916 NY Giants streak there was a tie. So, there's that....

I'd also like to see them get this foolishness out of their system now before the playoffs start.

Tying the Oakland Athletics' 2002 streak, and the current record for the "expansion era" at least.

21! American League record winning streak! \o/

I'm gonna go with not caring about the NY Giants' streak, because a tie is not a win and it's kinda blatantly fudging to say "well but they didn't lose either so it's the same thing", but it's not.
