Picnik Editing Features to be Removed in April

Unfortunately, Google has decided to shut down its Picnik image editing service and instead integrate the tools into Google+. As the photo editing features of Snapzilla rely on Picnik, they will be phased out in April, when the Picnik service ends. In the meantime, Picnik has made all of its premium features free, so you can continue to use them with Snapzilla.

I will look for some alternative solution, but it is very disappointing that Google bought it out and then shut it down. It was a very nice service.

Sigh. Back to Gimp for me, then.

they are refunding 100% Ann.

I'm sad because I used it and was getting ready to go premium in order to do a bunch of real life pictures for scrap booking.

This is awful news. I could direct beginners who didn't have a photo editing program to Picnik, and with it gone, there will be no easy alternative that's as good and as noob friendly.

They did suggest this Edit your photos - Google+ Help Creative Kit through Google + as an alternative but I don't have G+ (and not sure I want it considering all the nonsense I've heard but not sure if it's true about real vs fake names, etc). And also to use Picasso albums (don't have that either).

I love Picnik and use it for SL photo's, I use it for when I do my adverts for the store and just told my husband I'm going to be spending a lot of time between now and April getting real life pictures finished up and sent off for printing too.

I suck at photo editing in Gimp, Picnik was my saving grace.

I might have to actually learn photoshop now. Picnik is quick and easy...a few clicks and my photo was edited to my liking. Damn you, Google, damn you!!!!! Just for that, I'm making Bing my default search engine.

I pride myself not to photoshop any pictures I put on flickr, not counting the occasional cropping.

I'm disappointed. I understand Google wants to dominate, but this sucks. I have Google+, which has been useless to me, and I hate Picasa.

Anyway, for quick and fun edits, here's an alternative though it's not as nice as Picnik: Photo editor online - Pixlr.com edit image

I just received an e-mail from them about this today. Maybe because I used to be a premium member. One thing I do know is that I'm going to use the heck out of it, and the now-free premium features, between now and April.

I really like the photobucket editor. It has a lot of advanced options and everything is free, I only tried Picnik a few times but was annoyed that features that were free on photobucket were restricted to paied accounts on Picnik. Still it's possible that picnik could do things that photobucket can't, since I didn't spend much time on it maybe I missed parts. There are lots of filters like film grain, vignette and lomoish. It has magic wand and curves. Everything I need anyways!

Awesome! I have an account there but haven't tried in in forever. I will have to give it a whirl! Thanks for the tip.

If you don't mind a non-web application you might like PhotoScape. Free and easy to use.

Photoscape : Free Photo Editing Software (Photo Editor) Download

I received this email today, which is potentially good news:

Quote:
Greetings from PicMonkey!
I wanted to reach out and let you know that a small group of ex-Picnikers is building a new photo-editor that will serve as a great replacement for your current Picnik API integration.

We will offer an API with similar functionality to Picnik’s API. The branding has changed, and we've made changes to the UI, but the product will feel familiar to your users. However, we are making some additional improvements to the API interface which will require a few tweaks on your side.

When the time comes, we will be available to assist you as well as answer any questions. We are on track to have something for you to work with by mid-March.

Maybe Photo editor online - Pixlr.com edit image could be of help too?

I read an article that said that the CEO of Nokia believes that Google is going to more of a closed system route to combat fragmentation. Moves like this and other things that Google have been doing lately seems to make that statement true.

Quote:
Taking a shot at Google and the openness of Android, Elop said, "The situation that Android is facing, where the amount of fragmentation that you're seeing is increasing as people take it in different directions, is of course offset by Google's efforts to turn an open ecosystem into something that's quite a bit more closed as you've seen quite recently."
CEO Stephen Elop refutes Nokia's Android phone rumours, takes shot at Google - Tech - IBNLive
