Req: twitter

Here's the long and the short of it. Because LL is dumb, and forces us to use twitter if we want to know when.. oh.. transactions might be failing.. (twitter:SLGridStatus) I have this twitter client running on my home computer here.

As you know, snapzilla offers the ability to "autoforward" snapshots to our linked flickr accounts. That's great, and flickr@slpics.com is my #1 choice for snapshotting.

But now, I've got this twitter thing. (twitter:WinterVentura) And I've played with all the "flickr->twitter" things I can find. Websites that check your flickr feed and post to your twitter account for you, with a shortened link back to the photo.

Some really cool sites offering these services are:

SnapTweet :: Flickr Twitter Picture Posting
twittergram

These are great services.. but they have their limitations. Because they are third-party sites, they have to run timed checks of your photostream. It would be so much easier if you could tell flickr to auto-post to your twitter account when you upload. You can't, of course, Flickr is big, owned by Yahoo!, and doesn't like twitter for some reason. BUT! Snapzilla on the other hand, I could talk to.

It would be awesome if we had a checkbox or something... something that went like this.

[X] Post a link to my twitter account when I upload an image
[_____________] twitter account name
[_____________] twitter password
[_____________] append the following text to each post. (eg: #snapzilla #secondlife etc.)

Then maybe a button, for those people who don't want a whole big automatic-posting arrangement, but still want to "tweet this" from time to time.

The only annoying bit is the need for a url shortener. Because twitter only allows you 140 characters per post. But there are many many options available (torley's favourite seems to be tr.im your URLs , and I have to agree)... but http://tw.slpics.com/ah3748s would probably be fine.

Anyways, that's my dream.

I'm definitely open to the idea - I'll look into it more, I think it would be a great feature, and a nice complement to the flickr and facebook options. Thank you for the suggestion

The formatting I currently use, looks a bit like this:

[#secondlife pic:] insert this text before posts.

The text that starts "pretty cool idea" is the image "title" (the subject line in our snapshot emails). You can trace this particular post back to:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/winter_ventura/3466262427/
and before that, to:

So you can see how you have the same title already on file.

I'm currently using http://flickr.twittergram.com so you can look there for the kind of data they're working with.

I'm just gonna give this a little bump, cause I know Cris has been working on Snapzilla stuff.

Well, there's at least a new workaround that's a good deal more timely and about as useful as "SL -> Snapzilla -> Flicker -> Twittergram -> Twitter".. but it's still not quite as good as direct snapzilla/twitter interaction.

Look Out, Twitpic: Flickr Now Tweeting Images

While not a perfect solution, Flickr now supports autoforwarding email-uploaded images to twitter, along with auto url-shortening ( to http://flic.kr/blahblah ). By simply setting your "flickr email" on snapzilla to "whateveryoursis2twitter@photos.flickr.com", your forwarded-to-flickr pictures will now ALSO be tweeted to your twitter feed.

It takes a bit to set up, but I did it in less than 3 minutes.

The service is still lacking what *I* consider a vital feature.. that being there's no way (currently) to automatically prepend said flickr tweets with a hashtag.. so I either need to put "#Secondlife pic:" into every single snapshot description.. or I'll just have to wait for total integration awesomeness until Cris gets around to adding support to snapz.me (twitflick@snapz.me?)
