Thank you system

I have installed a system that allows users to thank each other for individual posts. I've seen it in use on other forums, and I have always liked it so I thought I would give it a try here - you will notice a new button on each post that allows you to say thanks. It also now shows how many times you have said thanks, and been thanked on the side of your posts. It's not a contest, btw, just a simple way of being able to say thank you.

There is a corresponding groan option also available, but given the potential for abuse, I won't be enabling it. Also, do not use the thank you feature to say thanks for posts attacking someone - that defeats the entire purpose and abuse of this will be removed. This is a positive thing, please keep it that way.

As always, your feedback is welcome and appreciated.

You totally need to activate the groan. It would possibly cut down on some of the bullshit.

Considering the "thanks" are already being used for purposes other than the intended I doubt that's a good idea.

The thank you is already being used in a negative way, so I can't see how the groan thing would help except to target certain people. I will consider it - I want to see how the thank you side goes first. I don't want someone to be embarassed because they are unfairly targetted.

Someone said it was some sort of vast conspiracy by the FIC. Can't quite remember who.

Might be "new toy syndrome" - overused because it is new. Or could be an unintended source of forum game competition for who gives and gets most thanks. Time will tell how it really gets used.

I'd like it better if it weren't listed under the name like a scorecard. The thanks under the post is nice, but I'd like that better if it were anonymous.

Just my 2 bits.

The issue with anonymous would be you can't judge the value of the actual thanks. 3 anonymous thanks isn't worth as much as 3 thanks from people I admire and respect.

I think Cris already intends to change it to this, but I dunno. As I understand it the feature is intended to be used for thanking people who give advice of a technical or whatever nature. "How do I do this," and you get thanks for your answers. The "thanked" posts are then searchable in case someone else is looking for similar answers.

Already it's being used to thank snarky/sarcastic/attacking posts... I think it defeats the purpose of the tool.

*shrug* I read it more as a "I agree / thanks for clearing this up / thanks for so eloquently saying what was on my mind / let's appreciation grief Kristian" etc. button. Kinda like the SC "Yeah, that!" emote. If it's really just intended to thank people for giving (technical) advice, it should come with a warning label. Just sayin'.

Can it be limited to the technical support, possibly newbie, forums? Also, opting out of receiving them at all is a good idea.

Ad me "no thanks" button beside the thanks maybe we can add and subtract all the thanks you's and all get back to zero?

Actually having seen the way various systems get used like this on other boards it make it kind of hard as peple started to compete for having the most "thank you's". Although on the boards I saw it on you got little ribbons and basically it was a tally without this extra added line of thank you's as a post so it wasn't quite as annoying...
