Angry The Moderation Myth

I wanted to take a minute to address something that I keep hearing making the rounds. For whatever reason, people keep perpetrating the idea that SLU is a heavily moderated forum, which is patently absurd. I rarely ever have to intervene on a thread, and when I do, it is to post to ask people to stay on topic and not let a thread go to hell. If it continues, I will generally lock it to let people cool off. I have also deleted a thread or post if necessary if someone is being purposely disruptive. In 4 years, I can count on two hands the number of threads I've had to lock or moderate.

SLU is not a forum site - it is a community site with forums, and as such, moderation of these forums is hardly at the forefront of things I want to do. People have always had a very wide berth in what they can post - in fact these forums were started as an alternative to the moderation of the main forums.

SLU is not SC and never was intended to be. However, SC itself was not unmoderated, and honestly, this site is not moderated much more than that was - I am just more willing to step in to keep things on track. So if you can handle some simple rules like no death threats, no posting of RL info, keeping NSFW content behind an external link, and acting like civil adults, then you won't have a problem here. If even that is too much for you, sorry, I hope you find a place that suits your needs.

I know you don't want to oppress folks -- but can you oppress only me, Cris? I miss the SL Forums. It'll be hot.

Speaking as a former moderator from elsewhere, one does not have to do maniacal moderation if one sets the tone at the start and stands his ground. Maintaining the position then becomes easy. Things will go bad only if that grip is shown to go loose a few times.

When the community at large understands the prescribed tone of the forum, newer people will tend to follow in step. When the community starts off out of control, it would take a monumental effort to put things back on track.

To your eye SC and SLU may have the same amount of moderation however, Cristiano, the starting tone you set here is different. Now you know why I post only here.

I like the way discussions progressed. I don't need the drama. I have enough of that from real life.

You've got good moves, keep it up.

I think the differences between SC and SLU were way exaggerated. SLU is protected in a lot of ways by its rep...and I think SC's rep is what finally broke FIC's back. When something is touted as a "anything goes" setting, people will say and do literally anything...until they collapse it from their own over-extremism.

I'd be proud of the fact that the SLU forums have a rep of not putting up with crap, Cris.

One good thing to point out is that it isn't cool to attack people who can't respond here.

This is precisely what I meant by "setting the tone" at the onset. When the SL Forums were going to close several forums made immigration announcements, one that struck me was SC that touted an unmoderated format. I registered there just so that no one can get my name, then proceeded to SLDrama and SLUniverse. "Unmoderated" is really asking for trouble. I had enough of a headache in the SL Forums with people flying off the handle ... and that's a moderated forum. I didn't want to be in an environment where that has the chance of becoming the norm.

Oh don't get me wrong, I am very proud of that, definitely - I have worked hard to nuture and build the site to the point where it is at. I was just hearing a lot of ridiculous rumors like I edit posts and control what people say, blah blah blah, so I wanted to set the record straight on that. I would not want someone to avoid the site based upon a mistaken impression due to hearsay.

Cristiano edited this post! It doesn't say anything like it did originally, which was an expose on the growing problem of purple wombats in my dreams.

I should ban you to set an example to all web designers to never, ever use bright purple as the primary theme for a web site.

Mea Culpa. I wanted to make sure it had my flair.

I guess it had a little too much.

I moderate other boards, too. I agree completely. I also try to make it a personal rule that the best moderators are those whose presence is virtually invisible. That's not always possible, of course, especially if you have some troublemakers. But it's an admirable goal.
