So after some experimentation today, I realized that as usual, I had made things overly complicated for myself. I actually already had something installed that could not only add a sidebar for me, but gave me the flexibility of adding modules to it and to use different sidebars on different pages, etc, and it did not require editing any of the pages.

I have turned on the sidebar on the forum home page, the search results page, and the forum listings, and will be adding it some other places. As usual, the stupid ispy feature turns out to be the one page that it won't work with, so for now I am leaving the sidebar off of there.

As part of an incentive to get the ads going again with SL only ads, I am offering a free side ad if you purchase a top banner ad for a limited time. This applies to current advertisers as well - if you already have a top banner ad, you can have a side banner ad for the length of time you bought the top banner for. Contact me for more info.

PS - if you wonder why I hate ispy so much, aside from the bandwidth sucking nature of it constantly refreshing, it is not integrated into vbulletin at all. I would be much happier with it if they made it into a real vbulletin addon, but it has not been updated in several years. I suspect at some point (perhaps with vBulletin 4 later this year) it may die once and for all.

Cris, even though I don't generally use iSpy I understand some of the other folks' attachment to it. And even though I don't have a current SL business, please know that once I do get one rolling again (soon I hope), I will be taking advantage of the exposure of SLU.

But what I really wanted to say was that you have the taste, the talent, and the expertise I trust to do whatever you think is right. So far I haven't seen a thing that would make me like SLU any less, or come here any less often.

Do you get revenue for SLU when ads are clicked by users, or only when they're sold?

It depends - I can't discuss the non-SL ads very much (they have some very strict terms), but it is a combination of page impressions and clicks, but the revenue from SL ads comes from the sale only.

Cris - I don't mind the new layout. Don't feel strongly one way or the other, and frankly, the SL ads here have often been a help to me.

Now, I hate to complain, but - why has SLU again started to forget my choice of color scheme (blue) and losing my session again (logging me out)? It did it months ago and I went to Firefox from IE, which fixed it. Now, since the latest upgrade, it is doing it again (in Firefox).

That tends to be the sign of a corrupted cookie - have you removed the cookie from Firefox and restarted the browser? I am sorry, it is something i have no control over.

The new sidebar shows up on the mobile SLU website minus the ad. At least it does through Mini Opera, but it does allow me to move the cursor around instead of it just moving along the highlightable parts which was very annoying.
