Cool Happy 5th Birthday, Second Life!

It has been five long, crazy, happy, frustrating, wonderful, amazing years of officially having a Second Life. Congratulations to Linden Lab and happy birthday to SL - without it, this community of people nor this site would be here. It has been a wild ride. Whatever mistakes have been made, Second Life is unmatched and an amazing achievement, and it has been incredible seeing it from the start to what it has become.

I hope SL is able to celebrate many more birthdays - it is too important and too special to let slip away under the weight of instability and careless missteps. Ultimately, that is why many of us are so vocal - we love both what SL has been and what it could be. Thank you to Linden Lab for their efforts - it certainly has never been easy or predictable, and it has been appreciated. Happy Birthday!

- Cristiano

PS - SLUniverse will be celebrating its fifth birthday later this year as well (though under a new name). It has been wonderful seeing the site continue to grow as SL has, and I'm proud to still be here.

I have to say, for all its troubles and the like, I am eternally grateful for all of the wonderful people that it has brought me too. Especially this wonderful community of people. Even bitchy Joshua. (love yas!)

Happy Birthday, SL!

And I agree entirely with Verti. To me, its always been about the people. I love the technology, but it's my wonderful friends that keep me going though the rough times.

The people are what make SL SL. With out them, who in their right mind would put up with everything that we put up with every day? I do hope that SL stays around for a very long time. I want to see it grow, to expand, to be what it should be. I still believe it can be. If you really think, could you imagine what life would be life if SL had never been? I know my life would be completely different.

There is nothing more boring that a virtual world with no people.

Linden Lab has always managed to be a community of creative characters as a company - and this has led to attracting the right kind or residents. While we may often second guess their policies and technical decisions, no one can argue about their ability to attract creative minds, which keeps me constantly intrigued.

Here's to five more!

Regards,

-Flip

Talk about a love-hate relationship.

I love what SL represents: an online space where people can be or do just about anything they want to be or do. It's let me learn some skills, make friends, and discover things about people (including myself) I otherwise never would have.

I hate SL's horrid mismanagement at the hands of the Lindens. I hate how it's been commercialized (yes, I know, it's inevitable). I hate LL's schizophrenic treatment of its customers.

I hope that when something better comes along (and it will, that's inevitable too) that I'll mostly remember what I liked about SL, and that its successors learn from the mistakes SL made.

Wow! Five years old. The terrible fives. Parents know what I'm talking about.

I think of SL as a five year old kid at their first day on the playground at kindergarten. Things are going great. Then that other kid comes over and dumps a bucket of sand over your head, then you bop them in the face with your shovel, then you're both crying, and the teacher comes over to break up the fight and wipe the tears from your eyes, and two minutes later you're playing with each other. Then some other kid with a bucket of sand... ad infinitum.

Like the parents of that kid, I really hope they survive till the next grade. Maybe it will be better then. Only time will tell.

Hang in there Second Life. I know I'm trying to, too.

Oh, and before I forget...

HAPPY BIRTHDAY
SECOND LIFE!

Second Life has been like a relationship to me. It does stuff that annoys you sometimes. It takes your stuff without telling you and loses it somewhere and hopes you don't notice. You tell it on more then one occasion things are not working out anymore and you are leaving. Lately it has a cute friend winking at you (open sim) and you consider the options. It's parents drive you crazy with giving it advice that makes your life harder then it has to be (Hi Philip!) But through it all somehow you always find yourself right back in bed with it and wondering what you would do without it. Besides, it has cool friends that you love to hang around with.

Happy Birthday Second Life and thanks to the Lindens that keep it going. It will be a wild trip to see what you are like at 10.

Happy 5th Birthday SL!

May you live long enough for your offspring (i.e. competition) to grow old and strong enough to bludgeon you to death in your sleep!

Did I type that out loud?!?

I'm kidding of course. For all of it's warts I still love SL and all of the great friends and weird, wonderful, whacky, amazing people I've met since signing up!

And I'll grudgingly thank LL (pah-tooie) for providing this great...game...ummm...no, not game...ummm...paltfor....no that's not it...errr...ah to hell with it - Thank you LL for providing whatever the hell this is to each of us!!
