I tried VirtualUniverse and VLUniverse (as in Virtual Life ...) but the .com & .net were already taken.

But how about a play on words - VurtualUniverse.com or VUrtualUniverse.com (the VU is abbreviated VirtualUniverse)?

They look kinda funky, but they're both available.

I have a thought though. Doesn't posting urls here exponentially increase the chance that some bot will see them, think they're desired, and go register and squat the domains?

NetworkSolutions will also automatically hold domain names people look up through them for a few days for 'quality assurance' or something.

This site is a good safe look up - They don't "reserve" lookups - I've had no trouble using this to search for available domain names Instant Domain Check

Network Solutions used to be the 800 pound gorilla of domain name services. Does that still hold true, or is there something better now?

I have used Godaddy.com for my domains for a very long time - excellent service and options, and the pricing is fantastic too. I think they are pretty dominant in domain registrations now as well.

Shakes head.....

Just heard about this. ** shakes head **
Someone wasn't thinking when they set out the edict.

On their page about trademarks and the like they say some stuff that is pretty scary.

According to them we can not use the following in any display format.
Second life, second life, sl, Second-Life, SecondLife, 2nd Life, 2Life, Second Lifers, Linden Labs, Lindex, slurl, Lindenism

An amazing long list of words to copyright and register as a trademark. Lindenism?? 2Life? Linden Labs? (The company is called Linden Lab)

There is no way they can restrict the use of the letters "SL" in a domain name. It is sort of owned by Sierra Leone and um that country has been around lot longer than Second Life.

slip.com? slang.com? slnews.com? mysl.com? Secondlife.sl???? Are they legal? Yes!! My second life in Sierra Leone = secondlife.sl
SL can stand for Sri Lanka, Sierra Leone, Second Language, or even slrecords.net who have been around for over 10 years. Longer than £inden £ab.

EasySL - Home
Microsoft Dynamics SL Home Page
Silver Lake College
Home | State Library of New South Wales
http://www.ircbp.sl/
Sierra Leone: Anti Corruption Commission: Integrity, Impartiality and Independence

God I want to see the cease and desist notice that they send to MicroSoft or the Australian government.

But it would seem that they are not just satisfied with domain names and branding on websites but also how we use their names in our text and footers.

This is OK:
the Second Life® virtual world
the Second Life® world
Second Life® residents
the SL™ community
an SL™ account
Linden™ dollars
the LindeX™ exchange
a SLurl™ link

This is NOT OK:
a Second Life
my Second Life
your Second Life
Second Life's
Second Lives
Second Lifing
Linden Labs

Just so we are clear. Linden Lab® Second Life® WindLight® Are the Registered names. As such we are meant to add the ® just after the word phrase just as above. The TradeMarks are Linden™ LindeX™ Second Life Grid™ SLSL Grid™ SLurl™ Teen Second Life™ TSL™ Your World. Your Imagination.™

Slippery slope to jump on. Residents are depressed enough with the antics of the company to now try and hit us with this.

Start referring to them as $econd £ife and £inden £ab? Seems appropriate..

I see it as a lot of hot air. They do not need more ill will and alienation of their residents. Surprised that they didn't trademark the alphabet.

Interesting that for part 4 they allow the name with out the ®

OMG what about all those sites that use the word second or the number 2 (brought to you by the happy folks of Sesame Street)? Doesn't that infinge. OOO and Life magazine I guess they need to close. What an absolute joke and farce.

Now I find that they are getting into language as well.
This is NOT OK:
2nd Life (can't shorten "Second Life")
2Life (no "Second Life" abbreviations)
Second-Life (can't hyphenate "Second Life")
Segunda Vida (no Spanish equivalent of "Second Life")
Zweites Leben (can't make a German equivalent)
第二生命 (no Chinese equivalent)
第二の人生 (no Japanese equivalent)
Your World. Your Voice. (can't imitate our tagline "Your World. Your Imagination.")

And here is their feeling on Domain names. Seems that they feel they can not go after the .sl users.

No Use in Second-Level Domain Names
. Do not use or register any second-level domain name that is identical, virtually identical, or confusingly similar to a Linden Lab trademark, including our Second Life and Linden Lab trademarks. A "second-level domain name" is the identifying part of a domain name that commonly refers to the organization or entity that registered it. For example, "secondlife.com" and "lindenlab.com" are our second-level domain names, and

This is NOT OK:

secondlife.net
secondlife.de
2ndlife.com
secondlife-grid.com
chinasecondlife.com
secondlifesoftware.com
secondlifetutorials.com
lindenworld.com

For our special permission to use "SL" or "inSL" with a domain name, see the License to Use SL™ or inSL™.

You live in Linden city, town or street or have linden as part of your name you have right to use lindenworld I would think. Reading their posting that seems to not be so. How is it that Linden which is a city name can be copyrighted? Pity those folk who live there. Can any one copyright for me New York or washington?

www.lindenschools.org
www.thelindenmethod.co.uk
www.lindenmi.us
www.lindenarts.org
www.lindenvineyards.com

We needs to contact these people and the hundreds of other web sites and let them know that they are in violation of the edicts and better shut down.

Jamie, they made it clear that they mean "within the context of virtual worlds" - if you're not talking about virtual worlds, it is a whole different ball game. That said, it is still a ton of work to switch my domains over - SLTrivia.com, SLGuide.com and SLPTO.com are all going away.
