DDoS Attacks Round 2

SLU was once again attacked this morning by a DDoS attack for unknown reasons, starting around 9:45 AM ET. I still have no idea why they are occurring, and I apologize for the downtime. The site may continue to experience slowness or additional outages.

Not your fault, Cris. Somebody out there has a very small penis and too much unstructured free time on their hands.

Cristiano, do you think you could run SLU on amazon web services for the same money that you pay for the current hosting? They run ddos protection included in the price...

DDoS protection isn't guaranteed anywhere. Sure, they can add safeguards into it, but there really isn't a way to stop it that I'm aware of.

On the other hand, Amazon is less likely to say "Hey, I'm really sorry this is happening to you, but we have a business to run. Goodbye."

Who would be likely to do this sort of thing? Is there a list of "usual suspects"?

...maybe rippers and copybotters who dont like being exposed?

We have a lot of current threads on those topics, and they are the kind of people to do this kind of stuff.

Someone is hopping on the script kiddo boat and firing off spam on port 8080 or something. Toot toot all aboard the noob boat. But for real I would not be surprised if they actually were aiming at 8080.
