My progress in learning Mandarin

日 sun
口 mouth
土 earth
肉 meat
牛 cow
牛肉 beef
匕 ladle
老 old (combination of earth and ladle for some reason)
田 field
水 water
马 horse
人person
子 child

ok, that's all I know so far but I started yesterday.

It's only learning to read Mandarin right now. I love the symbol for beef. It's the combination of the symbol for meat and cow.

So if you ladle some meat of a cow into the mouth of a child, will the sun shine and the dust blow away and your field be watered so that the old person can have his own beef?

Something made me laugh hysterically last night while learning some new symbols. When you learn a new symbol, it shows you user submitted mnemonic devices to remember it. This is the symbol for pig:

It is a combination of two symbols. The symbol on the left is the symbol for small dog, and the symbol on the right means "person who does". The suggested way to remember it was "Any person who does a dog from behind is surely a pig".

When I took mandarin in college, we didn't ever really get to the symbols - but I still remember a few polite phrases, the english translation of the equivalent of SOB, and how to spell in pinyin.

How are you learning? Course or online or with a book/CD type program?

I remember when I was taking japanese, we'd just started learning knaji and we went to our regular chinese restaurant and I was picking out words on the newspaper they had there [not many though], and then I had to explain I didn't know chinese.....
Mostly though we learned culture in my japanese course.....and wrote lots and lots of papers.

Your symbol is traditional - the one Cristiano posted is simplified. The "official" version of character usage according to China is Simplified, I believe. Taiwan uses Traditional. You can usually tell where a publication came from depending on which character set is used - China or Taiwan.

When I was in Chinese school from Kindergarten - 12 years they started out teaching us Traditional and then transitioned to Simplified when some standards changed. Most Chinese dictionaries will show you both versions of the character.

There's a lot of similarities between written Japanese and Chinese because the Chinese didn't have a written language and swiped it from Japan.

Because they smell and can't drive.

I was told the opposite by two people born in Shanghai when we were last there, blame them.

I never said I hated them.

Actually, as I was telling Cris earlier, I think I get it; going to Shanghai, watching the way people drive is utterly terrifying to behold because traffic rules seem to be more suggestions than laws. But somehow there's this group consciousness that kicks in and some meta-awareness where everyone knows where everyone is even though they're speeding down the highway and weaving in and out of lanes and driving like a bat out of hell. It looks terrifying, but it works.

I think the problem though is when people used to driving in that system move to a country where people don't drive as aggressively, so they look like they don't know what they're doing when in fact they're more ninja than the white people.

You're both wrong. The Chinese and Japanese both got their writing system directly from their Sith Space Overlords, who came to Earth using the star gate in Korea while looking for Magratheia. It's a widely believed fact!

It's all about the lane markings.

In the US, lines on the road = definition of My Territory. Invade it and get the Honk of Hate!

In Hong Kong, lines are the definition of official lanes ... a Good Idea. I will help you by using my horn to alert you to possible problems and exceptions dictated by necessity.

In Taiwan, lines are an Interesting Suggestion. Complex horn signals used to signal actual usage.

I am in awe of anybody learning a language. I lived in Hong Kong and South Korea for a fair bit and sadly never could pick much of the language up bar a few words to get around. Ditto on how you are learning?

One of my friends just finshed a course in this so she can go teach English in China - she showed me some of the stuff and I ran away lol

And try Egypt for nutty driving - head-lights? At night? Why? We have street lights!

Btw - I now have visions of Cris doing a Sheldon next time he goes to a Chinese take away

In Jakarta, Indonesia, no one looks behind them. At traffic lights you're surrounded but a swarm of small motorcycles who regard the green light as a checkered flag. She who hesitates ends up breathing the fumes of 100 baffle-less exhausts.
