Big Dog: The Most Advanced Quadruped Robot on Earth

This video is amazing. The movement of the robot is incredibly lifelike. In fact, there are points in the video where I actually felt sorry for the robot, like when it slips on the ice. Check it out:

Boston Dynamics: The Leader in Lifelike Human Simulation

Quote:
BigDog is the alpha male of the Boston Dynamics family of robots. It is a quadruped robot that walks, runs, and climbs on rough terrain and carries heavy loads. BigDog is powered by a gasoline engine that drives a hydraulic actuation system. BigDog's legs are articulated like an animal’s, and have compliant elements that absorb shock and recycle energy from one step to the next. BigDog is the size of a large dog or small mule, measuring 1 meter long, 0.7 meters tall and 75 kg weight.

BigDog has an on-board computer that controls locomotion, servos the legs and handles a wide variety of sensors. BigDog’s control system manages the dynamics of its behavior to keep it balanced, steer, navigate, and regulate energetics as conditions vary. Sensors for locomotion include joint position, joint force, ground contact, ground load, a laser gyroscope, and a stereo vision system. Other sensors focus on the internal state of BigDog, monitoring the hydraulic pressure, oil temperature, engine temperature, rpm, battery charge and others.

In separate trials, BigDog runs at 4 mph, climbs slopes up to 35 degrees, walks across rubble, and carries a 340 lb load.

BigDog is being developed by Boston Dynamics with the goal of creating robots that have rough-terrain mobility that can take them anywhere on Earth that people and animals can go. The program is funded by the Defense Advanced Research Project Agency (DARPA).

I would ride mine from bar to bar sitting on his back. when stopped by police i would say; "I am not driving officer..he has a hydraulic actuating system that is driven by sensors and and an on board computer seen through the eyes of audio stereo vision. So you see officer he is a free thinking being helping his master....and i would appreciate it if you treated him as such!"

guranteed I either get out of the D.U.I. or am committed under the "baker act" to the nearest loone bin.

I'd just like you to try to say that all coherently while drunk.

its really cool, and yet at the same time it gives me a creepy feeling. by creepy i mean... when that guy kicked it.. i almost felt 'bad' for the robot... like.. i felt sorry for it getting kicked.. like it was a 'real' animal.... and that realisation that i felt bad for it made me... kinda uncomfortable..

but anyways...! it \is\ amazing ^_^ and apparently heavy!!

I think it was the lifelike scrabbling to regain balance that did it for me.

When it slipped on the ice, I thought "Careful there... Good boy!" and wanted to cuddle him. I was also tempted to kick in the nuts the guy who pushed him.

Ah, yes. It's a him, btw. Not a "it".

You say that NOW, but when the Big Dog army comes running and jumping at you all screaming that crazy buzzing sound, knives and sharp hooky things all snapping at you ... you'll sing a different tune!!!!

Really I'd be more worried about Big Dog Heavy Fido jumping onto bed to lick your face. That's still 75kg.

Big Dog is easy to take down. For instruction manual watch Hoth Battle Scene chapter of The Empire Strikes Back.

The hyper-geeks who built Big Dog watched that movie too
