Scientists stop the ageing process...

Scientists have stopped the ageing process in an entire organ for the first time, a study released today says.

...

The researchers, led by Associate Professor Ana Maria Cuervo, blocked the ageing process in mice livers by stopping the build-up of harmful proteins inside the organ's cells.

...

In experiments, livers in genetically modified mice 22 to 26 months old, the equivalent of octogenarians in human years, cleaned blood as efficiently as those in animals a quarter their age.

By contrast, the livers of normal mice in a control group began to fail.

When the time comes they do significantly lengthen human life something will have to change about how we live.

Or else it will be a massive overpopulation issue. Just standard longevity now is an overpopulation pressure.

Of course eventually there is a heck of a lot of space for people to live in ...

If we get significant increases in longevity, then we need effective mandatory birth control, which I am all for. Unfortunately, there are a lot of Catholics out there who won't be all for it. I suppose you could always make it mandatory in order to receive longevity treatments.

It depends on how technology moves ..

If for example It were possible to get materials from asteroids and build large, inhabited space stations that could grow their own food...

The amount of humans that could live simultaneously would increase exponentially.

If only longevity significantly increased but we had to do it with our current access to resources and food .. it would be a disaster.

understanding better the aging process, could also allow scientists to "Speed up" the growth process in animals and plants, allowing for the faster production of food harvests.

A full grown cow in a month? A field of wheat in a week?

Why would that day ever come on a large enough scale to matter?

I just can't see the masses ever being allowed to live for much more than 100 years.

When my death comes, I will greet it with open arms and not look back.

Unless I can't post to SLU from heaven, then fuck it, I'm sticking around. I *know* you can post from hell. I have proof. I live in Kansas.

I could use an extra few hundred years to flux around... provided I don't have to do it as a Galapagos turtle or something. Of course, I'll have to convince Norway or Denmark to let me emigrate, because we won't be adopting the technology here in "god's country."
