Hospitals 'infested with vermin'

OK... this is just gross.

Hospitals 'infested with vermin'

Quote:
The cleanliness of most NHS hospitals in England is threatened by frequent invasions of rats, fleas, bedbugs, flies and cockroaches, a report claims.

Figures released by the Conservatives show that 70% of NHS Trusts brought in pest controllers at least 50 times between January 2006 and March 2008.

Vermin were found in wards, clinics and even operating theatres. A patients' group said the situation was revolting.
And my personal favorite quote:
Quote:
But health chiefs played down fears the infestations could lead to disease.
Ummmm fleas never caused on disease... yeah.. right.

Yes this is a 'report' based on figures released by the Conservative Party. These are not figures I would put any trust in. The 'state' of the NHS is always one of the sticks the Tories use to beat New Labour with.

Quote:
Ivan Lewis, the health minister, said the Conservatives had exaggerated the problem, and "talked down" the NHS in order to score a political point.
The Tories obtained the information from these sources only.

Quote:
The figures were obtained by the Conservatives under the Freedom of Information Act, with every hospital asked to reveal how often pest controllers had visited over the two-year period in question
Visits from pest controllers can also include preventative treatments.

Quote:
The Hygiene Code requires NHS bodies to have a pest control policy that anticipates and manages this issue.

"Trusts should take rapid action and follow through with surveillance in place to avoid pest incidents and minimize hazards.
"Use of pest control is a sign of good proactive management."
Bromley Hospitals NHS Trust, one of the trusts which brought in pest controllers more than 50 times, accused the Conservatives of producing a misleading report. A spokesperson said routine visits by pest controllers to prevent infestations was good practice.

Just a BTW a few Brits discussed this here the last time the BBC produced a misleading report. The BBC became little more than a TV version of the tabloid press after their emasculation by the Hutton Inquiry and all their reports should now be taken with several pinches of salt. They produce sensationalist journalism wrapped in a 'respected' logo.

Edit add :- While doing some weeding in the garden it occured to me that the Tories really do have a fucking nerve to critisise about ANYTHING regarding the NHS. It was that scum Tory Thatchers perverted market driven policies that was responsible for the crippling of the NHS in the 1st place. Even Little Lord Cameron-Fauntleroy has had to admit this or he couldnt berate New Labour about the condition of the NHS.

ew - yuck - always been told hospitals are unhealthy places. I just put the vermin down to a small percentage of doctors who don't really care a toss for the people they treat. The greater percentage I think do care and do try to make a difference.

"Figures released by the Conservatives show...."

Yanno, considering the scrutiny the NHS is constantly under, it makes me wonder what the situation is like in private hospitals.

I've used the NHS a lot over the past couple of years (both as an in and outpatient), and have been continually impressed by the cleanliness and quality of service... but then the hospital here is brand new. My GP just moved into one of those state of the art, "superclinic" buildings too.

the nhs has its problem, mainly due to bureaucracy and outdated practices, when i worked for them (a few years ago) a department of 7 staff had 2 managers and 2 external parttime consultants)

however...... i wouldnt change it for the american system

Just reading more into the figures involved, and it seems pigeons are not only treated as vermin but make up the majority in the statistics. Maggots in mortuaries (maggots on the occasional dead body? Nowai!), and wasps nests (causing wasps to get inside buildings), also figure.

It seems the NHS is compelled to report the presence of pests & vermin in its hospitals.

What are the odds of private hospitals being so public about their vermin infestations?

I mean, those figures ain't gonna look too good to prospective, paying patients trying to escape the Tory horror stories about the NHS, eh?
