Dropbox hacked. Do you trust 'the cloud'?

Dropbox confirms it was hacked, assures it's safe | News | TechRadar

Seems Dropbox was hacked. With companies urging us to store stuff on the cloud do you trust it? Google seemed to think demand for it's 8 Gig Nexus 7 would far outstrip the 16 Gig version as we'd store stuff on the cloud. It didn't happen and the 16 Gig Nexus sold out. It just feels to me like cloud storage will be an awful temptation to hackers with all that data stored in same place! One target instead of many.

LOL not a chance.
"My whole family got screwed over when the cloud was repossessed" lmao

Yeah ... always smart to keep your bits in a box. A fireproof one with keys. Also known as a safe. Why store stuff on "the cloud" when you can get external drives for a song and mirror them til the cows come home? Any company or corporation that has no physical back up of data (in more than one location) is begging to fail. Cloud.... still lmao.

I don't trust the cloud. Never have, never will.

It quite simply means dropping your files on somebody else's sever for storage, and completely into their control. I very much prefer to just rent my own server for that case.
If you want, even email hosters serve you that problem.

Trust isn't an all or nothing thing with me. For example, I trust strangers on the street not to punch me in my face... I don't trust them to hold my wallet.

'The Cloud' is the same way. I trust it (and dropbox) with a lot of trivial stuff. I don't trust it with any of my financials or sensitive private data.

It's all a matter of choosing the right tool for the job. (even if that tool happens to be, heh, a 'ghost' )

I use Dropbox to store documents I'd want if my hard drive. Yes, the private stuff is encrypted. Everything else was in my public folder anyway.

I use dropbox for moving video and animation between people working on a project since it's easier than driving somewhere with a thumb drive. I absolutely would not use the cloud to store anything sensitive or trust it as an only backup.

You've obviously missed the difference between a "stupid question" and a "stupid questioner".

See, again with the snide phrasing. I don't want to hijack this thread, it is just something I have noticed.

I just love the double standard here.. others call people "cunts" and nobody says anything. I say "stupid question" with a SMILEY, for Ghu's sake, and get called out for it?

Pathetic.

Businesses want us to trust the Cloud because it means reoccuring Subscriptions.

Also it makes it easier for "The Man" to track you.

Dropbox was not hacked.

One employee's gmail account was hacked. In that gmail account was a spreadsheet with a few hundred customer emails. Those emails were used to send spam to customers.

But let's stay with irrational hyperbole, that's more fun.

It's not so hard, someone just has to take the extra step of reading more than the headline of the article they linked.

Quote:
Dropbox has confirmed some account names and passwords have been stolen.

It was alerted after users started complaining about spam they were receiving to email addresses used only for their Dropbox accounts. It started an investigation, and found usernames and passwords stolen from other websites were used to sign in to "a small number" of Dropbox accounts.

One stolen password was also used to access an employee Dropbox account, which unfortunately contained a documents revealing user email addresses. Hence the spam.

Most of the people affected are from the UK, Germany and Holland.
IE, had nothing to do with Dropbox itself, it was people using the same passwords on multiple websites.

Most of the music I listen to on Spotify is way too time consuming to pirate, at least the genres I favor, that's another part of "the cloud" that's generally well done.

Likewise, I trust every thing and everyone, and nothing and no one at the same time....

I need a big chunk of data in a centralized location I can access anywhere? that's where I stick it... if it's important, or sensitive, I encrypt it, if not, who fucking cares... what I DON'T do is rely on it as a means of backup, or primary storage.... that's like checking to see if a gun is loaded by looking down the barrel and shaking it around.

Which suggests a program to store ALL your passwords. *headdesk* Sorry, but I would rather trust the password storage service on my OS rather than something written by a third party ... if someone can get to (and in) that database they are already able to get to much more important stuff anyway.

My fave method for if you absolutely MUST write your password down. Do not write down the username and the site anywhere.
