I just had a recruiter email, expecting me to work 25-30 hours a week on a short term contract, repairing phones and devices at iPhone stores for $15/Hr.

Another reason not to buy Apple, I suppose. How the f*ck can anyone live on those kinds of hours?

Burger-flipping robot begins first shift - BBC News

Quote:
Flippy, a burger-flipping robot, has begun work at a restaurant in Pasadena, Los Angeles.

It is the first of dozens of locations for the system, which is destined to replace human fast-food workers.

The BBC's North America technology reporter Dave Lee saw it in action.
Interesting video at the link.

This sort of thing would also probably require a change of how the burgers are packed for some chains. They may do it differently now but I know when I worked at McDs (20 years ago), the frozen burgers would just sort pf jumble in the box as more were removed and often stuck together, so you needed to pry them apart with the spatula or drop them against the grill to pop them apart.

The poi t is, loading random frozen burgers from a box would be tricky for a robot. Unless the burgers were packed a special, uniform way, maybe in little plastic slits to keep them straight.

Governor Nathan Deal of Georgia is expected today to announce a deal for a massive Facebook data center in our state. Ironically for a social network, the data center would located near Social Circle, GA. There really is a city called that in our state, and it has been around since 1826. It's about 45 miles east of Atlanta, near I-20.

I would just package them in bulk cylinders, the way ground beef comes from the store, and have the robot slice off burger-sized pieces when needed. I slice up frozen pork sausage by hand for breakfast, so the somewhat larger beef roll for a hamburger shouldn't be hard for a machine. By bulk cylinders, I mean like the photo, but flat ends:

Amazon has to fix Alexa after she starts creepily laughing for no reason

Quote:
Owners of Amazon Echo devices with the voice-enabled assistant Alexa have been pretty much creeped out of their damn minds recently. People are reporting that the bot sometimes spontaneously starts laughing — which is basically a bloodcurdling nightmare.

One person who was on the verge of falling into a peaceful slumber described hearing a "very loud and creepy laugh" from his Echo Dot. "There's a good chance I get murdered tonight," he tweeted.

Others made similar reports on Reddit. One person's Alexa refused to let them turn the lights off. "They kept turning back on." (Um, JFC GET OUT OF THE HOUSE!) They continued: "After the third request, Alexa stopped responding and instead did an evil laugh. The laugh wasn't in the Alexa voice. It sounded like a real person."

Others responded with their own accounts. "It started laughing like she was being tickled," one person wrote. "Tonight she laughed when prompted off, it was bone chillingly creepy. ... Still don't know what to think," said another.
Amazon has decided the problem is that Alexa is mistakenly hearing the "Alexa, laugh" prompt when other things are being said. They say they have fixed the problem by changing the command to "Alexa, can you laugh?" Although this doesn't explain the reports of Alexa laughing randomly in response to nothing...

Craiglist has completely removed the personals section of its website, after Congress passed HR 1865 earlier today, a bill which Trump is expected to sign.

The Communications Act of 1934, in practice, protects hosts and providers of web pages and services protection against liability for illegal user-generated content - assuming the page isn't dedicated to that kind of thing. So if somebody posted a virus or illegal pictures in a web forum, the owners of the forum don't get in trouble for that. H.R. 1865, removes that liability protection specifically in cases of sex trafficking. So a web host is not automatically free of liability if its users advertise prostitutes or handle sex-trade business and such on it.

It's kind of an open not-secret that a lot of the personals ads on Craigslist are actually for prostitution. So, Craigslist could conceivably be found liable for facilitating that trade on its site under this law.

I wonder if this is why Reddit removed a lot of subs related to selling guns or drugs.

I would say yes. Reddit removed a lot of things, perhaps a bit too much, but definitely enough to be on the 'clean' side of things.
