Giant asteroid harmlessly flies past earth for the millionth time

Superfast Asteroid Zooms Safely By Earth This Super Bowl Sunday

Quote:
Asteroid 2002 AJ129 is a mid-size asteroid that is somewhere between 0.3 miles and 0.75 miles (0.5 to 1.2 kilometers) across. It was discovered on Jan. 15, 2002 by astronomers with a then-NASA-sponsored Near Earth Asteroid Tracking project at the Maui Space Surveillance Site on Haleakala, Hawaii.

The space rock will be no closer than about 10 times the distance between the Earth and moon. (The average distance between the Earth and moon is about 238,855 miles, or about 384,400 km.)

But while asteroid 2002 AJ129 is classified as "potentially hazardous" by NASA, at no point now or during the next century does it pose an impact threat to Earth, NASA officials said.

Asteroids such as this have a mean lifetime of 10 million years, and this one orbits the Sun every 1.6 years. So it has likely passed the Earth a million times already without hitting us. It could at some point in the future, but not any time soon.

Minor cool news for spaceheads:

New Horizons Space Probe Captures the Farthest Photo Ever Taken From Earth
Quote:
While the rest of the world got busy checking out the photos of Starman (SpaceX’s dummy astronaut riding a Tesla roadster to Mars), a NASA space probe went about taking snaps of objects while it was around 6.12 billion kilometers (3.79 billion miles) away from Earth.

Moving on from its Pluto mission, New Horizons is now en route to the Kuiper Belt, right at the fringes of the solar system. It’s target is a Kuiper Belt object (KBO) known as 2014 MU69. While on its way, the spacecraft turned its Long Range Reconnaissance Imager on a cluster of these KBOs and took photos, becoming the first spacecraft ever to take pictures that far from Earth.

This[sic] historic photos of KBOs 2012 HZ84 and 2012 HE85 were taken on Dec. 5, 2017, while New Horizons was roughly 41 times as far from Earth than the Earth is from the Sun. The images were the closest ever taken of the KBOs.

Better yet, a chainsaw folds out and chops a hole.

Two questions occur to me.

1. What's the battery life on those things?

2. Can they plug themselves in?

If you're thinking the same thing I'm thinking (which is, "I WANT ONE OF THOSE"), then I have the same questions my own self. We're used to seeing Boston Dynamics releasing videos of noisy prototype robots with all their innards exposed and dragging around giant tethers; but the critters in that video look like they could easily be production models.

Skydio has introduced its new, autonomous camera-drone! Just tell it what it's supposed to be filming, and this situationally-aware quad will fly itself as necessary to keep the subject in center-frame.

Wait, their headquarters is 5 miles from the San Andreas Fault, and they built it mostly out of glass? What are they thinking?

It is designed to launch and hover a few miles off the ground in the event of an earthquake.
