Welp, that went about as expected. Dozed off about 10:00 pm. Missed the whole thing if there was a thing.

Why do these Northern Lights things always get scheduled at NIGHT?

I poked around the web and couldn't find anyone that posted pictures. Maybe it didn't happen.

Flash finally hits the end of the line!

https://blogs.adobe.com/conversation...sh-update.html

Quote:
But as open standards like HTML5, WebGL and WebAssembly have matured over the past several years, most now provide many of the capabilities and functionalities that plugins pioneered and have become a viable alternative for content on the web. Over time, we’ve seen helper apps evolve to become plugins, and more recently, have seen many of these plugin capabilities get incorporated into open web standards. Today, most browser vendors are integrating capabilities once provided by plugins directly into browsers and deprecating plugins.

Given this progress, and in collaboration with several of our technology partners – including Apple, Facebook, Google, Microsoft and Mozilla – Adobe is planning to end-of-life Flash. Specifically, we will stop updating and distributing the Flash Player at the end of 2020 and encourage content creators to migrate any existing Flash content to these new open formats.

Chrome will continue to support it in one fashion or another until 2020 too.

Thankfully, Flash content on the web does seem to've largely evaporated already - the rise of iOS (where Flash was never welcome, due to security and energy consumption concerns) and Android largely killed its future.

I wonder what folks currently designing with Flash will now use? (eg animators, whether on Newgrounds or for TV)

Eww! Google is testing putting autoplay videos into the search results.

Google now blasts autoplay videos straight into your Search results

On a related note, CNN's website is annoying with it's autoplay videos. I figured out how to fix that. If you are interested and use the Ublock Origin ad blocker pm me. I won't bother the rest of you with it.

Use StartPage’s https://ixquick.com instead? The results are at least as good, and like DuckDuckGo, they’re not into tracking or other obnoxious behavior - the ads are just text, and clearly marked as such.

For any Safari users: Safari Technology Preview now supports autoplay blocking internally (no extension required), with a default of yes/no/ask, which can be overridden on a per-site basis. Much as I like OmniWeb, I’m finding myself using Safari increasingly.

Well, that was easy!

I'd wanted to enable TLS/HTTPS on my site for a while, but hadn't been looking forward to getting bogged down in reams of instructions for how exactly to pull that off, if I even could, given I have a very basic hosting package (no support, but also no standing fees - just pay 25¢/GB for traffic, ideal for simple image and small file hosting. It's cost me almost $3 since December .

So, I looked through their FAQs, found Let's Encrypt's instructions for Apache on FreeBSD, and wasn't looking forward to it much. Then I checked a different FAQ, pointing folk to their forum, and there, I found a stickied thread with one posting, with simplified instructions: run one shell script.

A minute or so later, it was all done. ^_^

I wish one could extend the renew time through Let's Encrpyt beyond their rigid 90 days. But, you know, cron jobs. And yeah, certbot is a blessing to use.

Here's another pretty cool demo of ARKit someone hacked up with Unity3D, putting robot soldiers into an urban setting:

Physicists Prove 40-Year-Old Prediction With Incredible Neutrino Observation
Quote:
[S]cientists have found an all-new way to measure the “coherent neutrino-nucleus collision.” A physicist first predicted the possibility of these neutrino-interactions back in the seventies, and some think the discovery has nearly sci-fi implications for ways to use neutrinos in the future. Others were more measured in their take. But one thing’s for certain: Physicists think the results are exciting.

“Wow!!!!!!” Physicist Juan Estrada at Fermilab in Illinois, who is also looking for this effect but wasn’t involved with the new study, told Gizmodo in an email.
