That involves flying over the country. They would shoot at you and provoke an international incident. However, packages that "fell off a container ship" and washed up on shore could probably get in.

I'm always one to leap on beta releases of macOS and iOS, but with Aperture having been discontinued a couple years ago, it's now always a risk that a new macOS major release will break something it depends on. There are other photography DAM apps, true, but I'm very fond of how Aperture goes about things, versus, say, Adobe's Lightroom, so I'm in no mood to migrate until I absolutely have to. (And even then, I'd probably just keep it going in a VM)

So, it was a huge relief to have it confirmed on the MacRumors forum that yes, Aperture lives on under High Sierra. ^_^

Beginning December of 2017, in Canada wireless service providers can no longer charge customers a fee to "unlock" their phone so they can switch to another provider.

I'm not sure how to feel about this. On one hand, Hurrah! I don'y need to make my own bed... but on the other hand - weird and a tad creepy. A bed shouldn't move when there's no one on it.

Indeed - the state of cellular competition in the US is risible. True, there are "unlimited" plans, but for anyone like me, a very light phone user, it's next to impossible to find anything lower than $30/mo or so - every US cellco considers that to be the entry level. By comparison, I can get by happily with 100 or 250 minutes on GiffGaff for £5 or £7.50. (Yet, they are indeed a MVNO, ℅ O2, whose prices are are silly as usual. Go figure)

The Star Trek turbolift is becoming a reality.

http://www.wired.co.uk/article/thyss...aglev-elevator

This is major news for architecture because the main limiting factor for building height these days is the space requirement for elevators.

Imagine a ten-story building that has one elevator in it, which is enough to serve all the people living and working in it.

If you now double the height of that building, you also double the number of people in it, which means you need a second elevator to provide efficient transport. This increases the relative amount of floor space needed for the elevators on each level on the building since conventional elevators need one shaft per elevator that spans the entire height of the building.

So if in the hypothetical 10-story building 90% of the floor area is allocated to the basic functions of the building and 10% to the elevators, those numbers change to about 82% and 18% for a 20-story building.

At 50 levels, only about 64% of the area is available for living and work while the rest is needed for vertical transport. At 100 levels, half of the building just exists for the elevators - at 200 levels, it's 66% for elevators - at 300 levels, the elevators get 75% of the area - at 400 stories, that number increases to 80%.

Engineers use some tricks to increase the efficiency of elevators, such as using cabins with two decks or placing two elevator cars in one shaft, but that has limits.

This new type of elevator, however, is going to revolutionize the way skyscrapers are built. Just as Elisha Otis' invention enabled the construction of skyscrapers, this new technology will make buildings possible that go up for kilometers.

Arcologies, here we come.

Cute little quickie demo someone threw together with Unity and Apple's new ARKit. The shadows are generated on the fly, with ARKit understanding the 3D positioning of the lamp and the dancer, and where the floor is.

Wouldn't it be fun to have someone visit you in their SL av form?

I wanted to post this SOMEWHERE, cuz I'm stoked. I couldn't find an appropriate place to do so and then I found Science and Tech > Nobody Cares! I thought, "Yeah, Dil! It's perfect: for sure nobody cares so you're not interrupting anything important."

For like the last three days my DSL (don't: I get it. Old.) line has been behaving even worse than normal. Like DL bandwidth at about 1/3 of normal, which you'd laugh at but at least gets me by. I live in a pretty rural area and my only options are ATT DSL or satellite/dish. ATT is still considerably the better option.

Last night I finally got fed up and opened a support ticket online. Once I had the helpful support chat person convinced I really knew what a router and a WAN link and all like that was, he agreed they would need to send a tech. Next Wednesday morning. ARE YOU KIDDING?

Naturally I politely said 'Thanks' (it's not on him to schedule this stuff). But I looked around online at work today and found a Best Buy in a close-by town actually still has DSL modems in stock. I happened to mention to one of my fellow techs that I was planning to go ahead and cough up fifty bucks just to make sure it was on AT&T and not my hardware. He started rummaging around in one of the drawers where we keep stuff we used to need but don't anymore, and came up with a middle-aged Netgear ADSL Modem with router, a 4 port switch, and wireless! I'd been planning to ditch my aging router w/wireless anyway. If this worked, I could ditch TWO pieces of hardware on my desk and replace them with one (I need one port normally, two if I'm testing a PC. Wireless does the rest).

I just got it hooked up and configured it and Presto Chango! I am back to my normal pitiful download bandwidth!

Happy happy happy happy happy! (Yes, I will log in and cancel my tech visit: couldn't tonight because they're shut down. Will by tomorrow or Monday for sure.)

word to the wise, don't return their modem, keep it in case you have another problem... otherwise the tech that comes out will blame it on your equipment and bill you for it.
