It being April, I had to check the date on that BBC story.

This odd mammal can live without any oxygen for 18 minutes and with only 1/4 the usual amount for much longer. Usually creatures have to have oxygen in order to break down glucose but this animal switches to using fructose instead.

In 2015, Uber got caught by Apple for being naughty. It turns out that the Uber app as originally designed left a permanent digital tag on your iPhone when you installed and logged into the Uber app, a tag that remained on the phone even after you delete the app. "Fingerprinting" users' phones in this way is against Apple's developer TOS.

The code was live for at least a year before Apple discovered it, because Uber pulled a Volkswagen: they geofenced Apple's headquarters in Cupertino, and designed the app to show a false version of its code (without the digital-tagging parts) whenever somebody - e.g. an engineer - tried to examine the code from within the physical grounds of the Apple campus. It was only when off-campus engineers tried taking a look that Apple caught on. Of course because some App Store devs are more equal than others, Tim Cook forgave Uber for this blatant subversion as long as they promised to stop doing it.

It would have been great if Apple pulled their app and majorly fucked up their business for doing that.

Here's a nice video for you guys.

This one's 4K, so even if you don't have an UHD monitor you may wanna full-screen it, you won't be disappointed.

People put the lousiest music to wonderful videos. Why do they think they're goddamn Oscar winning composers?

I'm too lazy to look, but chances aren't bad you'll find it in here. YouTube made these available because so much good content was being taken down over music copyrights.

You can always mute it you know.

You're not exactly missing anything without sound. The crackle of wind blowing across a microphone, that's about it.

The crackle of wind has considerable content to lend verisimilitude to the experience of watching. Yes, I did mute it, but because I wanted to hear the sound of the wind, it was a bit frustrating to have to mute it to avoid the "music."

It feels like there have been a half dozen awful Uber scandals in the last few months anyway, Apple would be doing the world a favor.

I'm spending the weekend playing with my new laptop, prepping it to take over as my main dame for work and such. (Side note: SL looks pretty damn cool on its GTX 1050!)

Overall I'm digging this machine. Even when the fans kick in and it sounds like it's going to take off. The real problem for the moment is the keyboard. Primarily this part of it:

80% of the time when I go to tap the Up arrow key, I snag the Shift key at the same time, hence nothing happens. Sometimes I even do this when I'm looking at it!

Here's how they're arranged on the machine it's replacing:

Scrunched up in the bottom right corner made for an occasional annoyance, but at least the Up arrow was right where I expect it to be! I also miss that dedicated row of Home/Page Up/Page Down/End keys, but at least for those I've started training myself to go for the Fn+arrow keys.

I'm pretty adaptable when it comes to these sorts of things, but I may have met my technological nemesis in this arrow key setup. We'll see how it progresses...

I tend to reach around to find the arrow keys on my new laptop too. I don't hit the shift key though.

I've got a similar key/hand interface issue with my Alienware. When I go to hit the esc or ~ keys I tend to also smack one of the programmable macro keys that hug the left side of the keyboard.

On the useless but kind of neat side of things: I just started playing XCOM Enemy Unknown on it and the backlights for the keys and power button change from their default blue colour to RED during the alien activity turn.

Mirriam-Webster dictionary entry for "sheeple" includes dig at Apple?

Quote:
Sheeple, a portmanteau of sheep and people, is described as an informal word that defines  “people who are docile, compliant, or easily influenced” and thereby “likened to sheep.”

The first example of the word used in a sentence is your regular, run-of-the-mill example:

“James Nichols, who ran the family farm here, stamped dollar bills with red ink in protest against currency and told his neighbors that they were “sheeple” for obeying authority like livestock.” – Sara Rimer and James Bennet

However, the second example is much more interesting and possibly offensive:

“Apple’s debuted a battery case for the juice-sucking iPhone—an ungainly lumpy case the sheeple will happily shell out $99 for.”  – Doug Criss
I lol'd. ^^
