the design decision here had very little to do with "small spaces" and very much to do with anti-circumvention and monetizing mandatory replacement/upgrade. And it was widely noted back when iPods first hit market.

Also by pulling its previously certified products Apple is attempting to use its size and popularity to kill the existing standard. That kind of monopolistic weight throwing creates much of the ill will toward Apple.

I don't think that will fly... the government already has it's teeth in in the standard, and aren't likely to let go. it does mean that apple can shut down or retool their recycling program any way they want now.

It always pissed me off I couldn't carry spare batteries for the iPhone. The games I played drained the battery quickly. On my new HTC phone I can carry spares. Void sums up the reasons they do it. During the winter with my three days without power, those spare batteries were needed.
