Cisco Has Lost Their Freaking Minds

I will never, ever buy a Cisco/Linksys product. This is insane:

A few months back I had to replace my router. I had Linksys for as long as I can remember, but this time I bought a Belkin and I'm so glad I did.

I bought a new Cisco router last week and when I hooked it up, at one point during the process it asked me if I wanted to download the update. I did but it hosed up the whole thing and I couldn't access it any more. I took it back and got a replacement and this time didn't download the update. Glad I didn't now.

I think I'll order a different brand and take this piece of crap back.

What the hell? They want to shut down users for pron?
I guess they don't mind losing 99.999999999% of their market share.

I have long felt that Cisco is an awful awful company. Their products are all way over priced, wo its no surprise that they have had trouble getting a foothold in thw consumer market.

Also they insist on using their ancient proprietary shitty Cisco command line as the primary ibterface for most of their crap. At my old employer we had aone Cisco firewalls for a VPN to a remote office. I got into it to do a basic port opening/map to an internal machine for remote access, and the whole netwprk went down. Nothing I had done would suggest this would be the result but it was.

We eventually replaced them with some Netgear equipment and never had trouble again.

The next router I buy will be one that's compatible with DD-WRT.

Or I may just take the old netbook and put one of these on it.

I almost can't even believe this is true. It just seems so 'out there' that a company would try to dictate how a piece of hardware is used. I think I need to see some proof this is true.

EDIT: After digging around, I see the story is true but only in a round-about way.

I checked Cisco's various legal pages:

http://www.cisco.com/web/siteassets/...loud_supp.html
http://www.cisco.com/web/siteassets/legal/privacy.html
http://ciscoconnectcloud.com/ui/usta...ULA-en-US.html
http://ciscoconnectcloud.com/ui/usta...ice-en-US.html

It's in the last one that Porn and Illicit activity is listed.

Quote:
As a condition of your use of the Service, you agree that your use of the Service in accordance with the terms and conditions of this Agreement is permitted under and will comply with the applicable laws of the country where you use the Service. You agree not to use or permit the use of the Service: (i) to invade another's privacy; (ii) for obscene, pornographic, or offensive purposes; (iii) to infringe another's rights, including but not limited to any intellectual property rights; (iv) to upload, email or otherwise transmit or make available any unsolicited or unauthorized advertising, promotional materials, spam, junk mail or any other form of solicitation; (v) to transmit or otherwise make available any code or virus, or perform any activity, that could harm or interfere with any device, software, network or service (including this Service); or (vi) to violate, or encourage any conduct that would violate any applicable law or regulation or give rise to civil or criminal liability.
This is pretty standard boilerplate for many Online File sharing services, which is what CloudConnect is. (ie, like a Skydrive). They aren't saying you can't use your *router* for this. Just you can't use your 'Cloud storage' for this.

But, the fact they tied in this CloudConnect account to router settings means if you did violate the terms by storing such data on your 'cloud drive', and your account was shut down, you would then not be able to access advanced settings on your router.

So it's not quite as ridiculous as the article made it sound, but it is a troubling tie between one's hardware and a TOS related service, to be certain. I would probably just avoid using their 'cloud drive' altogether.

Edit edit: I see nothing anywhere about viewing browser history, and don't even see how a router could possibly do that. I think that part is pure FUD.

aside from the overweening sense of moralality and asinine privacy problems, what utter fucking moron thought that requiring an active internet connection to access and configure your router (which should be done BEFORE connection) was a good idea?

even without any issue of privacy or morality codes, that's some extreme idiocy right there... buh bye cisco/linksys, unless I can flash your crap with something a bit more sane, there is no way in hell I'll touch your product with a ten foot pole, let alone connect it to MY network.

Their equipment is not user friendly and complex so you have to do their expensive courses!

What kind of sucks in all this is that I really don't know that Cisco was trying to be evil or anything here. I am sure it was some developer's bright idea, everyone got excited and rolled with it and in the excitement they became blind to co.cerns that might come up.

With a little change, this could be a decent service. For starters, allow BOTH Cloud Connect and local access. Second, make the TOS less onerous.

Even more likely the legal beagles are trying to insulate them from some over reaching lawsuit from the RIAA, MPAA and the like.
