Google Unveils the Nexus 7 Tablet, Starting at $199 and has Android OS 4.1

From Engadget:

Some of the mystery has been taken out of it, but Google has officially taken the wraps off of the Nexus 7, its first reference-grade tablet. The 7-inch slate is the first and currently only device shipping with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, and takes advantage of its optimization for smaller tablet screens, magazines and movies. Like was widely suspected, the tablet is built by ASUS (shades of Eee Pad MeMO ME370T, anyone?) and mostly draws our attention in terms of what we get for the money: that quad-core Tegra 3, 1.2-megapixel front camera, NFC and 1280 x 800, IPS-based LCD are traits we'd normally look for in a pricier tablet. How much pricier, you ask? Google is asking just $199 for a dainty 8GB model and $249 for a 16GB version -- that's a lot of speed for the money, especially with a $25 Google Play credit and a slew of bundled content. There's no SD card slot, however. We'll test the Nexus 7 as soon as we can, but you can swing by Google Play (and possibly local stores) to order one in Australia, Canada, the UK and the US with a mid-July shipping window.

Even though I already have a 10.1" Android Tablet I would like to have something more portable. The Kindle Fire wasn't something I wanted since it can only use apps that Amazon wants you to have.

The offline viewing of Google Maps is already available for Android devices.

Interesting! A good price too and it's getting a UK release unlike the Kindle Fire.

I just found out that it will ship with the mobile version of the Google Chrome browser as the default browser. It can also be downloaded now but only for devices with Android OS 4.0 and up.

The more I look at this device the less enthused I get. Mainly because it has no SD slot and no back camera. I would prefer to get the cheaper model and have the storage be able to be expanded if needed. I don't take any pictures with my Android tablet but it's nice to be able to do so.

I'm just pleased it's getting a UK release! No doubt Amazon will get their arses in gear now, but too late. Here I was waiting to hand them dosh for the Kindle Fire and they just wouldn't release it here.

Go with the Nexus over the Fire anyways, and I'm typing this on a Fire. The Kindle Fire is more of a multimedia player than a true tablet. It also lacks an SD drive or camera, and as Edav said, it's limited to the Amazon app store unless you root it, although you can sideload apps if you have the. apk file without rooting it. Its keyboard is barely usable, its web browser works but is only so-so, and it sounds like the Nexus will have a lot more under the hood as well (compared to the Kindke Fire's dual-core chip). The main advantage of the Kindle Fire is that it's cheaper than most tablets, and it's got a lot of the multimedia stuff already set up to download and watch movies.

But if the Nexus is the same price and you've got the choice, I don't think that I could recommend the Kindke Fire.

I'm wondering if USB sticks will work. Daft of them to miss out on an SD slot.

then again, my rooted nook color doesn't get used nearly enough as it should be.

That's probably why the 8GB model costs $199. They could have sold it for $250 and it still would been a good price.

the cynic in me says planned... because then they can charge premium on the built in memory for upgrade... and I don't know anyone making thumb drives with micro connectors, so that means extension/adapter and maybe even needing drivers for mass storage devices.

It seem to have more hardware prestige too. I mean, I've actually heard of the manufacturer. Asus. The Kindle Fire is made by Quanta.

I'm glad Google are pushing hardware featuring Android ICS as *they* envision it, because as far as I'm concerned, manufacturers like Samsung have completely undermined it with many of their personalization decisions.

I'll be waiting it out for the Windows Surface though.

Included and downloadable on the tablet:

Some issues of the Conde Nast Traveller and Popular Science
Bourne Dominion e-book
Being able to download the Transformers: Dark Side of the Moon movie
Songs from Coldplay and the Rolling Stones

For pre-ordering you get $25 credit for the Google Play store.

After careful thought I'm going to pre-order one even though it doesn't have expandable memory or a back camera. Looking at my ASUS Transformer it has 16GB of memory and I don't even use 7GB of it. Plus the Nexus 7 would be more convenient to carry around than the Transformer.

Looks like mine could be shipped within the next couple of days since I already have a pending charge on my bank account for $228.91 that is set for July 9th. According to the order FAQ people won't be charged til it is ready to ship.

$50? The price I saw was $19.99 for the Gray one which has a "Coming Soon" tag.

It could be that the dark gray one is only available through Google since I noticed that the picture I posted above doesn't have that color. The article above quotes the prices from third-party retailers so buying through ASUS and Google could be cheaper.
