"Facebook: The Browser" It slices, it dices, it will fuck up your search results by switching back and forth from "Most Recent" to "Most Popular".

Website Location Tagging would be a nightmare. "Dancien Graves looked at WHAT?"

Damn.

I used Opera during a dark period in my IT experience when I worked at a place that preached the MS gospel and would not countenance any other software. It was the only one with tabs that wasn't just IE with another face.

Facebook is now in that damnable position of a company that has to look good for it's shareholders and perform.

They will be implementing tons of takeovers in the near future that will up the company value and therefore increase the dividend for it's shareholders.

If they have nothing else to give within their own core product, the only way they will give satisfaction for their shareholders is to grow by swallowing up other companies along the way and procure their ready made assets.

wait, facebook, the company that specializes in ridiculously useless information overload and mishandling, is going to take over the browser that specializes in.... doing the exact opposite?

I wish I believed that this would be good news for facebook, but I expect it will be bad news for Opera =S

Facebook is behind on the delivery of content to mobile devices.
Quote:
Mobile gaming is growing at a staggering clip. It already rakes in more money than the combined revenues of Nintendo and Sony. Yet we are just at the start. According to market forecaster Gartner, the U.S. mobile gaming market was worth $1.53 billion last year. By the end of the decade that number is expected to rise to $7.8 billion.

I think they want their own browser so they do not have to share info through that portal, same with apps. For every bit of data moving across the web there are people trying to figure out how to commodetize them.

Opera was a good way to get a decent browser onto a phone that was okay on the hardware level but unnecessarily gimped by the service provider in some way. I doubt it will be useful for that if Bigname Corp takes it over. It's too bad. Part of why I won't sign a cell phone contract is the way the providers lock stuff up in absurd ways. Just charge me for data, dammit.

I used Opera years ago, when I first decided that IE sucked and I hadn't found Firefox yet. I didn't like that the free version had an ad-banner built in at the top and you had to pay to get rid of it. Other than that I thought it was pretty good at the time.

I've used Opera since version 2.12 (Win 3.x) and I really hope that FB does not get to screw things up. I've disagreed with some of Opera Software's choices (it seems like the marketing department took over, which is generally a bad thing) of late, but FB getting at it? Yuck. I might have to settle for the kludgy Firefox or something then - in an attempt to keep away from FB's utter lack of comprehension of proper behavior.

The first change is Opera will support the new <like> tag.
