ASUS Transformer TF101 Getting Android 4.0 by Early February

From Android Police:

Owners of the original ASUS Transformer (TF101) were ecstatic last week when ASUS promised the Ice Cream Sandwich update to roll out shortly after the one for the Prime, meaning any day after January 12th was fair game. Considering ICS for the Prime went out early, and shortly after ASUS Singapore posted this

and then retracted it, we reached out to our ASUS U.S. rep to get everyone's stories straight.

ASUS: Transformer TF101 Ice Cream Sandwich Update To Roll Out By Early February '12

Quote:
Here's some of the enhancements found in Ice Cream Sandwich:
  • Option to use virtual buttons in the UI, instead of taking up capacitive touch buttons
  • Widgets are in a new tab, listed in a similar list to apps
  • Folders are much easier to create, with a drag-and-drop style similar to iOS
  • A customizable launcher
  • New phone app with visual voicemail functionality that lets you speed up or slow down voicemail messages
  • Pinch-to-zoom functionality in the calendar
  • Gmail has offline search, a two-line preview, and new action bar at the bottom
  • Swipe left or right to switch between Gmail conversations
  • Integrated screenshot capture by holding power and volume down buttons
  • Improved error correction on the keyboard
  • Ability to access apps directly from lock screen (similar to HTC Sense 3.x)
  • Improved copy and paste
  • Better voice integration
  • Face Unlock, a facial recognition service
  • New tabbed web browser, allowing up to 16 tabs
  • Browser now automatically syncs your Chrome bookmarks
  • Modern "Roboto" font
  • Data Usage section in settings lets you set warnings when you reach a certain amount of use and disabling data when you go over your limit
  • Ability to kill off apps that are using data in the background
  • Camera app: zero shutter lag, time lapse settings, zoom while recording
  • Built-in photo editor
  • New gallery layout, organized by location and person
  • Refreshed people app with social network integration, status updates and hi-res images
  • Android Beam, a NFC feature that lets you exchange websites, contact info, directions, YouTube, etc.
  • Don't like some of those preloaded carrier apps? Disable 'em. Android Engineer Dan Morrill mentions that, among other new features, any app can be disabled, and while it will still take up space in ROM, it won't be snatching any of your precious resources or clock cycles again if you don't want it to.
Some of those won't be in a Tablet and some of those were already on Android OS 3.0 which was for tablets only.

I picked up a Transformer and the keyboard dock a few weeks ago. I got the Transformer because of the impending 4.0 update. I like my Transformer, but if they have to delay the update to get it right, its fine with me.

Forget what I said earlier. I simply turned on my tablet, and it automatically downloaded the update. After checking around and not seeing 5 million "My tablet got bricked" threads, I went ahead and updated. Its been good so far. My Transformer seems to be running a bit faster too.

I was just going to post that it was ready to download in the U.S. I also read that it is now available in Canada and the UK.

I wonder if they updated the dock's firmware because I am getting a much better response with typing. Usually on SLU there is a slight delay when typing on a thread. I didn't look to see if it was updated or not but it could just be the improvement to the speed of the tablet itself that is doing it.

I got my update yesterday as well. So far it seems much quicker with everything. I like the unlock screen as well.

I didn't expect to get it so soon, and when I got the "firmware update" I was a little surprised. At first I thought it might be some sort of prep update to get ready for ICS but when it was all done and rebooted itself, I checked the rev and I had 4.0.3 ( I think it was a 3...after seeing the 4.0 I was happy)

Are you talking about the Face Unlock? I can't find the option to use it.

It is much more responsive and I like the swiping off the apps in the Recent Apps list but I read that it doesn't close the app it just gets it off the list.

Not sure what its called, but its the blank screen that you have to touch and swipe to unlock it. The original swipe allowed you to go any direction. The new swipe has you swipe to the right to unlock or swipe to the left to go straight to the camera

I don't care for the fade-in-page effect in the app list, the sliding outlines in Honeycomb were much easier to keep track of, but otherwise it's a big improvement. I love being able to pull up the camera app from the unlock screen.
