That could be extremely useful information. If there are particular popular aps that drain your battery faster, the handset developers can look at what functions of the app are draining the battery most and design more efficient hardware/software to address those specific battery draining functions.

Overall, the purpose (as being told to the public) of CarrierIQ is good for both the handset developers/wireless providers and us, the customers, since its main function is to aid the handset developers/wireless providers in producing better products and service.

But the handset developers/wireless providers should have known that a program like this would spark outrage. They should have known that it should include an opt out/in and been fully disclosed. Having it function like spyware was bound to attract wild accusations.

the lasting problem isn't what is being done with it (which we still don't actually know), but what can be done with it, and the fact that it was hidden. As a general rule if a function exists, eventually someone will use it.

so you missed the part about it being in iPhones too? (deafult off and diagnostic mode in the one they confirmed). while not turned on, that can be changed in any update, and you'd have never known it. the features are still there, and that's a problem.

No, I didn't miss it. Apple has already said they are removing the last vestiges of CarrierIQ in an upcoming update. I have had diagnostics off from the start as it is.

So again, I won't have an Android product until its gone completely. It sounds like its US carriers only though so it may be a moot point for me anyway.
