microsoft office free?

I need some help and I know I can trust the familiar names on this forum.

The software my school uses is microsoft office 2007. In my first quarter I downloaded and used the free trial version at home. But that only lasts 60 days.

I have a load of work on a thumbdrive that I just tried to open, but because I created the work at school, it won't open now that I'm at home. I need to open it because the completed project is due Monday morning.

Is there some open source type of office program that will open a microsoft office 2007 document that is free to download and SAFE?

Tried OpenOffice?

Not sure if it'll do office 2007, but it does a lot.

ETA: According to this, it can open office 2007 but can't save. Sorry

If you have Office 2000, XP or 2003:

Download details: Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats

If not, OpenOffice is probably the best option as Spaceman notes.

Unfortunately I don't have any of those either.

All I need to be able to do is open and it and copy and paste so that I don't have to redo all the work. Going to take a look now. Thanks.

Word 2007 can open older versions of Word, as can Excel - so if OpenOffice will let you save in an older format, you should be able to open the files at school.

Allana, I have been using OpenOffice for a number of years.

I find the database program to be lacking, but since I really don't need it that's not important. I can do just about anything I need to.

Looking at the "open" just now, it does not appear that it opens Word 2007. But you can save as any format you need to. If I am sharing a doc, I save it as a Word doc or pdf.

I've switched to OpenOffice as well. It isn't feature complete, but does everything I need it to, especially for Word/Excel compatibility. The Powerpoint clone Impress needs some work, but overall, it is a fantastic package. A few features I really love:

- ability to import PDFs and EDIT them like a normal editor, and save in any format you need (MS Word, ODF, PDF)
- ability to open a Powerpoint in Impress and export it as a single SWF (Flash format) for display on the web
- it costs $0 (but I've donated to the cause)

Regards,

-Flip

Ned, are you using OpenOffice 2.x? The second link I posted above said if you upgrade to 3.x you'll be able to open them, but not save in the 2007 formats.
Quote:
The files produced by Microsoft Office 2007 are also called Office Open XML, OpenXML, OOXML, Office 12, .docx, .docm, .xlsx, etc. (other extensions).
  • OpenOffice.org 3 can open these files, but it cannot save in these formats.
If you experience imperfections with OOO 3.0 or are using an older version of OOo 2.x, you have several options:
  • Upgrade to OOo 3. It's free.

Check with your school too, often microsoft "gives away" office 2007 to students and or employee's of corperations and school who own licences to thier products.

I know where I work we got an e-mail just last week from our IT dept with just such an offer. have to pay $35 for shipping and handleing and we get a full version copy of office 2007.

So is Office. I hate all these "office suite" packages.

I edit documents in XML or HTML, so I can so all the damn markup myself.

I write my documents in text and convert to HTML using a customized Textile perl script and go from there, myself. That way the source is readable without being all gooped up with HTML.

I can't remember what this program is called, but I used it through my old employer, and if you leave your job your license to use the software ends. In theory, you need to uninstall the software (I had converted to mac by the time I quit so it wasn't an issue for me.)

Yea, I can get it through the school for 69.95$. Even that is outside my current family budget for something that benefits only me.*

Unless you are dependent on specific features of Office, it's never worth the price.

I use Google Docs for pretty much all my word processing. Once they added offline editing (via Google Gears) that sealed the deal for me. Word processing is one area where I don't mind using a "cloud" for file management, and the sharing feature is handy for things like getting estimates to clients or collaborating on creative strategies and website architecture outlines.

I tend to ask myself, when it seems gooped up, "do I really need all this markup?"... and often as not the answer is no.

The trick is, put your divs (paragraphs, etc) on the right.
