My Mood: | The sound of planets Some of you may find this interesting. While the vacuum of space prevents sound, electromagnetic waves are present which can be translated into audio. The Voyager and Cassini probes were able to pick these up near Jupiter and Saturn. They're pretty trippy! Jupiter Saturn OK Saturn's sounded so much like the sound effects of a 1950's sci-fi film that I decided to go find it on NASA's website to make sure I wasn't being conned. Nope, it's real: NASA - Eerie Sounds of Saturn's Radio Emissions Finally, Earth:

My Mood: | This one is the sound of the Sun ... sort of. The sun's electromagnetic emissions are at a VERY low frequency, below our hearing range. But if you speed up the recording significantly you get this: This video explains why/how: |

My Mood: | Very cool, thanks for assembling the videos. They sound like Space for Music--only cooler, since it comes from a planet. For some remixing fun, try playing more than one video at a time, or two of the same. ![]() Also, if anyone wants to save the audio from these (or any other youtube vids, paste the url to this site, then save.) | You can hear sounds like these on Earth using nothing more sophisticated than an AM radio... the Earth's magnetic field is a lot weaker than the fields of the gas giants, but it's quite capable of generating sounds loud enough to hear when you're inside it. One reason that these sounds are familiar to connoisseurs of '50s SF movies is because the people making the soundtracks were inspired by the "sounds of space" people were picking up on the radio. Natural VLF Radio Home Page level two - Sounds of Space Weather - S. McGreevy, N6NKS Apparently you can actually pick up RF from Jupiter's magnetic field all the way back here on Earth.
