I don't recall if it's in the book version or not, but Stanley Kubrick certainly anticipated this in the film version of 2001: A Space Odyssey when he depicted Dr. Heywood Floyd making the initial leg of his journey to the Moon via a Pan Am spaceliner.

Alas, Pan Am has gone the way of the dinosaurs, but I could totally see flying to a space station aboard a United or British Airways (Spaceways?) spaceliner in a few years.

The cynic in me wants to point out that what they are really advocating is more jobs for astronauts. Every single other part of me desperately wants to fly into outer space, so I'm all for commercial space travel.

Isn't Virgin heavily involved in this?

Virgins are a dying breed.

Wouldn't you rather make a space flight with someone experienced in charge, rather than a virgin?

Unfortunately, Virgin has nothing to do with NASA's commercial spaceflight program.

NASA wants a commercial service that will be able to deliver cargo and astronauts to the ISS, which means orbital capability. This way, they can divert their resources to exploration and innovation.

What Virgin Galactic is proposing is a suborbital hop that basically offers rich passengers 10 minutes of microgravity before the rocketplane falls back to Earth. Their system is VERY far from being capable of reaching orbit, so it's not much more than a very expensive joy ride.

But it's cool nonetheless and I would love to go
