Windows 7: Vista Without the Crap

This is an interesting perspective for those considering upgrading to Windows 7 from Vista (a move I cannot recommend more highly):

Oh, sure. Wait til I acclimate to 64bit Vista and then make it easy to switch back

After working pretty extensively with Win 7 this year, I'd recommend that people look beyond gaming benchmarks when comparing Vista and Win 7. Win 7 performs a little better in games than Vista, but there are other aspects of the OS that are much faster in day-to-day use.

System boot, application launching, application switching, hibernation resume-to-usability, oh and home networking is way faster (not so much the connection speed as actually discovering and connecting to other systems). And the more RAM you can throw at your PC the better it will behave.

I'm still on the fence about 64-bit. None of my personal systems will run 64-bit. And it only really benefits you if you have over 4gb RAM for the most part anyway, since most applications are still 32-bit.

EDIT: Oh, and Search actually finds your files now.

I am running both the 32 bit and 64 bit versions of Windows 7. There is not much of a learning curve going from Vista to Win 7 - it is definitely worth the upgrade just for the taskbar changes alone. I have way too many computers in my house - I have Windows XP on a netbook, a Mac Mini with Snow Leopard, a dekstop still with Vista, and two notebooks with Windows 7. Out of all of them, I spend the most time with Win 7 - I've been using it for 6 months, and hate it when I have to use something else (even the much vaunted MacOS). While I did not dislike Vista, it is a definite improvement - it is what Vista should have been the first time around. They definitely got it right this time.

I would recommend 32 bit for a 2 gig system, and 64 bit for a 4 gig system (if it is a 64 bit chip). 32 bit Windows cannot handle even a full 4 gigs of memory - if you have 4 gigs, it uses about 3 gigs of it, which is a waste. The good news is that Windows 7 will change the 64 bit picture dramatically ultimately - my mother's $600 Sony laptop came with 4 gigs of ram and a 64 bit OS. Even though there are not a lot of 64 bit native programs yet, that will change.

I was upgraded to Win7 on my work laptop a few days ago because IT couldn't figure out what was causing intermittent network connecion issues; Vista was considered to be a probable suspect, and since my problems are gone, it appears they were right.

I'm still tripping up over muscle memory that says "click here" on the task bar and is getting an annoying preview pane instead. Desktop is also 2 clicks away instead of one. But as soon as I either 1) get used to this or 2) find a way to make these quirks go away, I'll be happy enough with the new OS.

Any issues running SL on Win7?

The desktop is still one click away - click the bottom right corner next to the clock. SL runs fine on Win 7. Also, if you click on the icon on the taskbar, it brings up the active window - if you hover, it shows all open windows and lets you select the one you want to go to. Right clicking on it gives you options.

Re: Windows 7 $29.99 Tomorrow

Microsoft is officially releasing Windows 7 tomorrow, and I?m sure there are people here that are planning on buying it. If you?re a college student and have a .EDU e-mail address then you are in luck! Microsoft is holding a promotion where you can get Windows 7 for only $29.99. You can chooser between the following Windows 7 editions:

Windows 7 Home Premium (32-bit/64-bit)
Windows 7 Professional (32-bit/64-bit)
Don?t know which one to choose? Let me make it easy for you. Windows 7 Home Premium provides a great media experience and is intended for home use, while Windows 7 Professional edition is intended for Office use and has additional features like Windows XP Mode and Domain Join. If your university requires you to Domain Join, then you must get the Windows 7 Professional edition.

If you qualify to purchase Windows 7 for $29.99, you can purchase it from Win741.com.

Carth is installing his now ..... We bought a 3 user licence 'family pack' so I am gonna install it too later when I have had some sleep.

My Lappy has an AMD Turion x2 64 but with only 3 gig of ram. I am on 32 bit Vista atm. IS there any benefit to me installing the 64 bit version or should I just install the 32bit?

I would stick with the 32 bit version - you can't upgrade from 32 bit vista to the 64 bit version anyway - you have to do a fresh install.

I apparently won't have my upgrade kit until sometime between October 30th and November 9th. Hmph.

Well this totally sucks. I was part of the beta test but never noticed that XP Mode is not going to be part of the Home Premium or the media package is not in the Pro version. Guess they are trying to direct the flow of people towards the expensive Ultimate version.

EDIT: Correction, Pro has everything that Premium has PLUS XP Mode +.

The Pro version does include the Media Package . Unlike Vista where some of the higher version dropped this , with Windows 7 , each higher version includes all features of the lower versions as well as additional components.

Windows 7, what's the difference between the editions?
Just curious, why do you need XP mode?

SoftScan, a structural bill of material reader for Autocad. Saves me hours of work as opposed to typing all the data off of 40-160 prints at a time. The data can then be read by the other program we use and needs XP: Fabsuite.

Ah, that makes sense then - most users, even coming from XP, would have no use for XP mode.

Ugh. My Mac Pro has two dual-core processors. I guess this means I'll have to shell out for a copy of Win 7 Pro at some point. While I'm sure I don't have any games that use all four cores, it seems a waste to not have the option available.

Hmm, I just realized that my "RTM" installs of Win 7 Ultimate do not include XP Mode. I am downloading it now.
