Barnes and Noble Releases Kindle Competitor

The Nook makes the Kindle look a bit stodgy. And it has wifi. Same price as the Kindle.

Barnes & Noble's dual-screen Nook reader official | Electronista

The eBook market space is getting interesting, but I'm still waiting to see what Apple and Microsoft have up their sleeves.

It let's you lend books?!

Dammit. I hate Barnes & Noble, for lots of personal reasons, but it looks like they did this one right.

I have the same issue. I prefer Amazon over B&N, but the Nook is pretty nice.

Open Letter to Amazon and Barnes and Noble

Dear Amazon and Barnes and Noble,

Stop giving ebook readers stupid names.

Thank you,

What do you want them to call it, the eBook?

Kindle's have wi-fi also.

I like my Kindle, but my guess is the Nook's look will be more appealing to the iPhone crowd - although Kindle already provides a reader app for iPhones.

I don't see a lot of substantive difference yet. I wonder if they will drop the Nook's price when the Kindle price drops soon for Christmas.

Should Amazon Bring WiFi To Kindle?

Speaking of the Kindle, Amazon has fired back. In addition to the already extant iPhone app, Amazon is releasing a free Kindle application for PC:
Every Win 7 Tablet Is a Multitouch Color Kindle (With This App) - Amazon - Gizmodo

Well I have a Kindle... and it has wi-fi connection. It's how you download books or shop their store.

It's not an internet browser, if that's what you mean. (your link refuses to load for me)

As for a Kindle app for the PC, good news, that's all that was lacking for my happiness with the product.

I think you're confusing the Kindle's wireless cellular service with wifi.

I hated the screen flickering to black and then white every time she changes a page or the font size. Horrible.

The new versions are much faster. What you're seeing is the eInk technology, which as I understand it is a burst of electricity aligns metallic particles into the print each time you turn the page, then it turns off. This is what gives you the print quality contrast and the week+ battery life.

The Kindle has the ability to connect via wi-fi to the Amazon store if that's what you mean. It's not a browser, nor frankly would I want it to be. If I wanted an all-in-one appliance, I'd get an iPhone.

My concern with Barnes & Noble is that they already got out of the eBook selling business once back in ~2003... and Fictionwise, which is owned by B&N doesn't have many of the titles I've looked for recently.

*shrug* I'm satisfied with my Kindle. In a couple of years, I'll see what else is available when it comes time to replace/upgrade. I don't see the Nook as an automatic Kindle killer though.... especially if you own the DX version which has a native pdf reader and handles even more formats than the smaller version does.

What really matters in the end is access to books. Currently, most books that have been digitized are available in several formats. If a publishing house was foolish enough to try and force a choice of formats, then I think they would quickly change there minds. Book piracy is still fledgling, but they should learn from the failed music industry business model.

It actually connects to Amazon via AT&T's cellular network. No wi-fi involved.

That may be an option if you pay for the service, however, when I use my Kindle at home, it connects to my wireless router.

I can't get a cell phone signal in my apartment, but just out of whimsy, I turned off my router (needed a reboot anyway) and was unable to connect - therefore, yes - router.

For that money, I think I'll stick to just, uhm, buying a computer.

There is also already a Kindle app for the iPhone/iPod Touch.

My decision to go digital was driven by how much of a pain in the ass it is to move a library of 800+ books. I'm now down to ~100 paper books and 1500 digital. Big difference to moving.

Although I own a nice laptop, I needed a digital book reader that performed in much the same way a paperback does because I'm one of those folks who always has a book in her purse or pocket. So it had to be about the same size and the print quality had to close enough to ink to not strain my eyes (I read voraciously).

An eBook reader was the perfect answer. Now my "book in the purse" is really several hundred books and I don't even have my Kindle half full yet. I back it up (its a usb device afterall) to my laptop just in case.

The battery had to perform well too, and at ~1 week of heavy reading, I'm pretty happy.

Besides, my laptop cost $2,000 and the Kindle cost $250.
