Oracle buys Sun

The Database Systems company Oracle Corp has just announced an agreement with Sun Microsystems Inc, to purchase Sun.

The Associated Press: With IBM out, Oracle jumps in to buy Sun for $7.4B

Makes the future of MySQL (the database behind SL ) an interesting one, which was acquired by Sun last year. My guess is that Oracle will still market/support MySQL (which has become Opensource) but push the high end users on to their Oracle system .

Is this better, or worse, than IBM buying Sun?

For MySQL users, worse. IBM is already making money of MySQL selling servers with Linux/MySQL. This gives Oracle not quite a monopoly, but a huge market share of the paid for and free DB installations worldwide. It will be interesting to see where Java goes in the future under Oracle. Will PL/SQL disappear, or be converted to a more Java styled language? Will Oracle break from ANSI standards and make stored procs more like Java? Java is pretty much the most popular language out there - with C - still, to this day. It is going to take some time to digest what impact this will have.

Regards,

-Flip

This would piss me off.
I develop oracle procedures, reports and forms for a university.

The only thing that would piss me off more is if they screwed with Pro*C.

Okay yeah that's more frightening than funny.
