MSoft to warn users who try to download Chrome or Firefox

You remember all those jokes about Edge being the Windows 10 to download web browsers?

Looks like Microsoft are getting a bit fed up ...

HOW F*CKING DARE MS TRY TO ENCOURAGE THE USE OF THEIR OWN PRODUCT ON THEIR OWN PLATFORM there's literally a link right there for turning these kinds of notices off.

The question, I think, is more why are they bothering with messages that are far more likely to annoy their customers than to persuade them to switch browsers.

If Windows 10 were freeware, I'd not be so irritated by nagging messages like this, but since I've paid for it, I don't want to be spammed with unnecessary messages promoting their products.

Just imagine if Microsoft was run by Comcast, or Verizon, or Wells Fargo, or a payday loan megacorp...

Last time Windows 10 tried to update on my laptop it failed so badly I had to reinstall.

Around midnight last night I was awakened by the same laptop starting up with "Updating Windows NOW" message. Probably would have been better to just let it update (or fail) in another room, but being sleep deprived made it hard to think past 'fuck you' and it is sitting on my desk with its battery pulled to deprive it of any power source.

And now this shit (pushing Edge) is coming down the pipeline?! Do they actually want people to use Windows 10?

Because the people who really are deadset on installing Chrome for actual reasons are going to ignore the message anyway so it doesn't matter; but there are a whole heck of a lot of people that "use Edge only to download Chrome" for literally no other reason than that an internet meme says they're supposed to want to do that, and Microsoft is aware of that; so giving those users a little note that says "hey you already have an internet browser that's streamlined and faster than Chrome and might be all you really need in a browser, so why not give it a try first" likely won't hurt anything. I doubt most of those kinds of users would really be "annoyed" at a message like this without anti-MS people telling them they should be.

I think the issue (outrage? beh...) is not so much this pop-up message, but rather that Microsoft continues to reset certain settings, such as whatever one relates to this pop-up, after every update.

RESPECT THE SETTINGS.

Yeah, and it it's probably good advice to eat more fruit, too, but I don't expect my web browser to nag me about it unless I've asked to be reminded.

Hmmm. Just got a message from Chrome that there was an update and did I want to "tour" the new features. Naturally, I said no. And not a peep out of Windows 10.

Of course, I do have Edge activated and functional. I just never use it. Intentionally, that is. I have IE set as my main browser but mostly use Chrome. Especially since my IE and SLU have stopped being very cooperative.

Borg has seen modern social media and attempts assimilation accordingly!

Check out the Borgs Youtube channel and don't forget to strike with a vicious blow on that like button and rub up against that bell icon so you get notified every time the borg uploads another DIRECT ORDER video!!!

So much for "the new open-source friendly Microsoft".

They're also installing a metric shedload of spamware. I got a gig and a half back by uninstalling all the games and advertisements for xbox live and other crap on my new tablet. There was like three times as much Microsoft bloatware as HP bloatware. Who do they think they are, Dell?

Also, pineapple pizza is awesome.

Google and Apple kinda usurped the Borg crown quite a while ago, so it's all that was left.

Most people appear to be aware of how invasive and unethical Google is, but there's this bizarre willful masquerade about it that everyone participates in. Google especially has pretty much become everything that everyone was warning Microsoft would eventually become but never did; but aside from occasionally retweeting negative news articles, nobody seems to care much - which makes all the MS hate so bizarre. I mean, people will flip out over telemetry for dev purposes and a message saying "Please give our browser a try! (or click here to disable these types of messages)", but then they go and download Google's web browser. And like, actually use it for their internet activities. I'll never understand it.
