More than half of you is not human

So say "scientists." Queue the "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" meme images.

More than half your body is not human
Quote:
Human cells make up only 43% of the body's total cell count. The rest are microscopic colonists.

Understanding this hidden half of ourselves - our microbiome - is rapidly transforming understanding of diseases from allergy to Parkinson's.

The field is even asking questions of what it means to be "human" and is leading to new innovative treatments as a result.

"They are essential to your health," says Prof Ruth Ley, the director of the department of microbiome science at the Max Planck Institute, "your body isn't just you".

No matter how well you wash, nearly every nook and cranny of your body is covered in microscopic creatures.

This includes bacteria, viruses, fungi and archaea (organisms originally misclassified as bacteria). The greatest concentration of this microscopic life is in the dark murky depths of our oxygen-deprived bowels.

Prof Rob Knight, from University of California San Diego, told the BBC: "You're more microbe than you are human."

Originally it was thought our cells were outnumbered 10 to one.

"That's been refined much closer to one-to-one, so the current estimate is you're about 43% human if you're counting up all the cells," he says.

The number of microorganisms in and on the average person is pretty wild and it's an interesting topic but....

...this is written dumbly. Human cells make up 100% of your body. Hitchhiking microbes aren't "part of your body" any more than a kitten sitting in your lap is part of your body.

I dunno. Said kitten isn't intimately linked to your inner workings on an ongoing basis.

Come to think of it, said kitten has no useful function at all, if mine is any sort of representative ...

What if you were to eat the kitten?

Only some of the microbiota in and on you is of use to you. The rest is just along for the ride, or feeding off you in a way that doesn't hurt you, but doesn't particularly help either. The mites in your hair or nesting in your skin are a good example of this last.

So the kitten doesn't provide any use to your body - but your body provides useful functions to the kitten. You feed the kitten and provide it with shelter, medical care, and waste removal.

I consider "Body" an umbrella term for a collective form of somethings. How much of your body is water? How much is fat? How much is internal passengers? (^_^)

For some real fun: Do you have a body? Or, are you a body? Is your body merely property of and intangible entity you believe to be your self? If an arm is cut off and taken elsewhere against your will, is it still part of your body? Or, is your arm just a very firmly attached kitten hanging from your torso? =^-^=

...but is there really a you to have a body, or not-have a body? Is the body you have now the same body you had five minutes ago, or will have five minutes hence? Is it a different body from the one you had at five years old, or is there simply more of it?

I am a connectome. I’m the unique, near-impossible to reproduce, very fragile network of neurons in my brain. My body is the hardware capable of running and protecting it’s process so I continue to exist. My body is something that I have, I can say it belongs to me, it’s mine on such a vital level that I can say it IS me, but I would still be me if I had any alternative.

If I lose a limb, it loses that vitalness to me, but it still belongs to me by rule of I had it first.

Man, evolution did a shitty job with that design didn't it, putting all of the important bits in a little ball on top instead in the middle surrounded by a thick bone shell pr something.

Well, and to us they are half our digestion.
We only actually digest meat/proteins, fat and sugars on our own, after all.
Anything that's plants and other stuff gets digested by that bacteria colony in the large intestines, and the result gets digested by us! Same reason why many exclusive predators have none, or a very small version of that bacterial colony in the guts. Colon-y. I'm so silly.

Omnomnomnom.

Over the course of 10 years, almost every cell in your body (except for your neurons) will have been replaced.

So let's say you buy a car in the year 2000 and by 2010 you've replaced every component except for the engine block. Every seat, bumper, hose, tank, bolt, wheel, window, wiper, headlamp, battery, fan, light, and the entire body are all different from the one you bought. Only the original engine block remains.

Is it still the same car?

According to the government, if it still has the same VIN, then yes.

The B-52 strategic bomber has been in use for 60 years now. They actually embody your example - pretty much everything has been replaced. On the other hand, my 2000 model Chevy Cavalier still has most of the original parts (I've had it since 2002). Tires, brakes, battery, sure those have been replaced, but they are limited life parts.

You run into the same philosophical problem when you replace computer parts, assuming you do it piecemeal over time rather than building a new system all in what shot. Install a faster CPU this month, more RAM two months from now, clone and replace the system drive at the end of the year (keeping the old one as a backup of course), a new video card next...at which component do you draw a bright line and declare you're building a new computer by installing it, as opposed to simply upgrading your existing machine?

If one has an OEM version of Windows, Microsoft will sort that out for one. Windows stopped working? CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR NEW COMPUTER!
