RIP, AOL Instant Messenger

The more shocking thing is that it was even still around:

AOL Instant Messenger service to say Goodbye in December

I had a student the other day include their AOL email address on their resume, and it made me wonder why a 20 year old had an AOL address, like maybe they inherited it from somebody in the family?

I have a client with an online grocery delivery business, and I find it surprising how
many customers still use AOL email addresses.

AIM! I remember all the little noises!

I never used it my own self of course. I just remember the noises when other people were using it. When I was little the thing among kids at my school was ICQ; I still have my number written down somewhere! But around middle school everyone graduated to either YIM or MSN, although everybody used like Trillian or something like that, so we could all still talk to each other. I joined MSN, which a couple years later became Windows Live Messenger. And then like around 5 years ago WLM was rolled into Skype, so that's where I am now.

I used to be all fastidious about keeping my IM apps up to date and logged in and everything; but there's little point now. SMS texting really supplanted IM's purpose, and even on top of that I hardly text any of my friends anymore - more like just send a very occasional email. So now the only thing I keep around is Skype, because I use it to keep in touch with some SL/internet friends that I don't give my RL name and phone number to.

Logged in. Someone immedately messaged me asking where I'd been the last 7 years.

He'd been on my Skype...

AIM. 20 years ago it still had more granular control over chat functions and privacy than Second Life even has now.

Holy crap! People still use that? It's been years since I even last heard of AIM!

Next, you'll tell me that YIM is still around!

*googles*

Oh, crap - it is!

I miss Yahell NAC. Native American Chat. Those were some crazy days.

But the one I miss the most was from way before I went to Yahell NAC and I don't remember the name off hand. But I've never forgotten Two Long Braids and still think of her from time to time. I even still have a few of her emails from almost 20 years ago.

Yahoo! and AOL have always been, I dunno... too "plebian" for my tastes. Now that Verizon has gobbled them both up... It's making me want to change carriers. Ugh.

My 20 year old Yahoo mail address is still there. I even pop in there to bulldoze the forest of spam from time to time.

I've heard from somewhere that 90% or so of AOL's paying internet subscribers don't realize they're already paying for highspeed from some other provider and that they aren't actually using the dailup internet they're paying for at all.

How can they not realize? Surely they must have placed an order for high speed internet at some point.

I have a Windows Live email address (@live.com), from before everything was converted to Outlook.com. When the conversion happened we had the choice to convert an @live.com or @hotmail.com address to @outlook.com, but I chose not too; I decided having a legacy @ gave me some imaginary veteran cred, kinda like having a Second Life last name that's not "Resident".

I have some alias @'s on my account though; they're both @outlook, as of now you don't have an option to have a different one. I seem to remember there being a choice at one time but I'm not certain.

Last year Yahoo contacted me to tell me I would have to change my password since they no longer supported 4 digit passwords anymore haha.

Yure and I met on Yahoo.jp so there is one good thing about that.

That was probably also originally through AOL. How things change!

When Outlook first kicked off you did have a choice between @hotmail.com or @outlook.com. Which is why my other account is @hotmail.com and my third one is @outlook. By the time I made the third one, @hotmail.com wasn't available anymore.

If Yahoo is aware of the length of your password, you should stop using Yahoo.. that means they don't even have the most basic of password salting and are storing your password as plaintext or something reversable rather than a hash. Scary that they own Tumblr, too.

I worked there for a couple months (it was a joy to quit from, especially after they pulled the bait and switch of hiring me as a programmer then giving me qa work and nobody listening to my suggestions on process improvement). They actually have a strategy of making it hard for users to quit, nobody would stay with them if they had a choice. As to IM? Ever notice sometimes you can see people but they can not see you? Or that you can not see people you KNOW are online? Well, they have 2 different systems and they do not always talk to each other very well.
