Sansar open beta coming up

It was probably a slip so don't tell anybody but at yesterday's TPV meeting, Oz told that Sansar will go to open beta next week. He said Monday first then changed it to "next week anyway".

Whirly posted a video from the meeting on YouTube:

And here is Nalate's comment:

All right! Think I might dip my toes and see whether this is the mean-spirited, SL-user-hating Armageddon that people like to say it is. It's been killing me knowing there's a NDA beta going on because I wanna know stuff!

It isn't SL-user-hating but whether it is relevant at all to many SL users, remains to be seen. I have my doubts.

We now know that Sansar will be open for anybody in less than a week. That ought to be big news but it isn't. I watched the Project Sansar group chat when somebody posted about Oz' slip there. Drax was livid - apparently he had prepared to break the news in his next show. But he was the only one. The rest of the group talked about it for a few minutes without too much enthusiasm before drifting off to other topics. That's in a group for SL users who are specially interested in Sansar.

Nalates Urriah posted about it at the SL forums. It took an hour or two before it was deleted and in the meantime nobody seemed to pay it much attention at all.

I'm beginning to think SL users have grown tired of Sansar already and of course, very few people outside SL were ever interested at all. I'm afraid Linden Lab will launch a half finished product that nobody are very much interested in anyway. That's not a good start and I hope I am wrong.

What's to be interested in? There's such little real information released so far that it's basically just a black hole for anyone not under NDA.

Sansar is going to appeal to a different demographic of user than SL does. Not everyone needs or uses WordPress. But, most of us use sites built with WordPress. Sansar will be similar.

On July 11 I received an invite to Sansar. With it comes notice of an NDA with which one will have to agree to get into Sansar. I didn't bite. Doesn't seem productive if I am going to blog. So, my neck isn't out. Also, I haven't heard a word from LL.

If this was a big deal for them they could have asked me to take it down. I probably would have.

I am seeing most of those I know would be all over this Sansar news remain silent. I suspect they have signed the NDA. Have they received notices to stay silent in regard to the Third-Party Dev statements? I would guess so.

Daniel Voyager posted the news. That post is now gone. If you follow him in Feedly, you can still see it there. Also, Wordpress' PING thingy popped it up in my comments.

Saturday I was happily posting the news all over. I did post in the SL Forum's Creation section. That locked and only one person commented before it locked. Within 8 hours the post disappeared. Searching the ENTIRE forum on Sansar doesn't find it. So, it wasn't moved to Gen Dis where most Sansar stuff is found.

I haven't seen any notice or email about the post's removal.

‘Second Life’ Successor ‘Sansar’ Launches Open Beta Today, Pricing Revealed

Quote:
Linden Lab, the company behind the virtual world Second Life, is today launching successor Sansar into open beta, this time built for the VR era. Though based on much of what the company has learned from running Second Life over the last 14 years, Sansar isn’t exactly a sequel, and instead takes a new approach to virtual worlds.

While Second Life was built as one giant world, Sansar’s architecture is more like a platform. On it, “creators” can host virtual worlds and experiences for others to visit, though those creations are not plopped down in one continuous virtual space; instead they act more like discrete, interconnected virtual environments which can be accessed by browsing the world’s Atlas’.

Hey it is a LL site, so it will take a few days before everything runs more or less smoothly.

But:
I think you van sign up for the beta now in another way than a few days ago.

I know, Sid. But unfortunately (for me), my desktop computer runs on Linux - and my laptop (on Win10) is currently at the local pawn shop.
Although I doubt that my laptop even meets the minimum requirements for Sansar.

I'm currently trying to get that installer running via WINE (or, rather, via PlayOnLinux), but I doubt it'll work.

The press release goes on to highlight some of the capabilities associated with Sansar, including:
.....
A relationship with TurboSquid to provide creators with access to hundreds of additional high-quality 3D models in the Store today, with thousands more being added in the coming months. This will be extended with integration with TurboSquid’s StemCell initiative to make it easy for TurboSquid’s community of 3D modellers to immediately upload and sell their creations in the Sansar Store, further augmenting the assets readily available to Sansar creators.
Interesting.

Hmm. I wonder how my GT 750M (2GB) compares against their stated GTX 450 minimum.. I might be able to squeak past the requirements, assuming the VM hit isn't too bad. (VMware and Parallels both do a pretty good job on keeping the overhead low)

Definitely a pity about the current insistence on Windows, and the bizarre absence of mobile platforms.

This is huge news!

I have a gtx 950m. My movement seems smooth. It took a couple of minutes to load the area. This is my first view after turning around.

Very nice, McAfee has put one of the installation files from Sansar on halt as being suspicious .
I guess I wait a few days, weeks, months.... Let them bang on things first a bit more.

I was able to register and download today without a problem. It did take about 5 minutes to load Zen Garden in Sansar.
