Perhaps this is why Sansar is made to be different

Just watched this video of MMO players trying Second Life for the first time. It may explain why LL is giving Sansar a different feel:

having MMO gamers give an opinion about Second Life is like sending vegans to review a steak house on all you can eat day.

I agree - but - where is the next generation of virtual world citizens to come from? SL has an aging population.

they'll log back in later after they go to the gym. An hour spent of them laughing and being griefers while questioning other people's ability to attach penis's.

All the while show casing the various things like flying, builds, etc.

If it was that bad, they would have logged off after the first 5 minutes

Ok, that was pretty entertaining.

Also I feel like they have more experience at this than the video implies, I mean she figured out how to change her clothes and then they were griefing people?

Reading the comments on YouTube was entertaining as long-time SLers tried to explain what SL is (with little success at making it sound appealing), and others tried to justify their own disdain for the platform while also admitting they have played SL for years. Good times.

The one thing I've noticed about some of us MMORPG folks is that some need to be told/led what to do. I tried to bring friends over from City of Heroes (yeah that long ago), even making a new alt to just explore with them. Their biggest thing was "what do we do? What's the end game?" It was like the whole concept of not having set goals to reach was foreign to them.

They didn't stay long since they didn't have tasks to do, faction to grind etc... Their loss.

I really feel like SL missed the opportunity to become "a platform for games". I realize you can do most of this but I feel like ti should be pushed more.

Like you have one SL avatar, but you can go play a "racing game" as the driver, or go on a medieval fantasy world, not a single small sim but something large and sprawling, not WOW big but still very large.

Maybe even have separate portals and normal "game menus" built in. Like maybe at the viewer, you can select "Car Racing" "Space Shooter" etc, then you log in, select your car or ship or whatever, then rez in world, still looking like yourself" but dressed and equipped right in the game itself. No walking or rezing a car, no digging in the inventory to wear some armor.

All of the things you earn could be used as decoration or outside int he broader world as well, like you could wear your armor from SL WoW while driving your Car Racer car around the mainland if you wanted.

Sansar will have a "different" feel because Ebbe Altberg wants to have a dinner with the pope, thatīs all. And NOT because one cannot unbutton a blouse with VR goggles and controls.

The real reason for Sansar is because the coding for SL has gotten so bloated they can't fix things that have been needing fixes for years. For instance, the permissions bug. They say it's been fixed yet it still happens and it's been an ongoing issue for 10 years now. All LL can do is keep adding code and pray that if it messes something up, they can fix it so they won't have to claim it's a new feature. Sansar gives them a clean slate. But they'll probably muck it up just as bad as SL, if not worse.

I'm an MMO gamer [well, have been, haven't had the time lately]. Also, since all MMO stands for is Massively Multiplayer Online, SL is an MMO too, just not an MMORPG.

I've also been in SL on and off since beta.

I agree. SL can be considered an MMO but it is not an MMORPG. SL was never intended to be an MMORPG.

Then how come your SL join date says "SL Join Date: Oct 4 2009"?

Well, i guess maybe you lost access to your beta SL account, or just don't wanna be associated with that account anymore... and so use the join date of some other avatar, rather than your earlier-SL account avatar?

'cause i joined in early 2006 and still wasn't one of the real pioneers of SL.

Mmm! on the other hand you did say "beta", and LL was calling SL still in beta forever (maybe even still to this day). So maybe you only meant that... ~ For some reason when i read beta i was thinking like alpha-super-early SL. Like some of the way oldies here!

Back in the Help People Island days, I probably had that conversation at least 200 times. "How do you play this game?" "Well, it isn't really a game in that way ...."

I don't know what you mean about LL still calling SL beta. It left beta in June 2003.

But Adeon even said.....

..According to this:

History of Second Life - Second Life Wiki

"Second Life closed beta started in November 2002 and lasted until April 2003 when public beta started. Read more about History of SL Beta"

So public beta Started in April 2003, but with my skimming i didn't notice where they said public beta ended and the proper release happened...

So who knows!

Edited: Oh my skimming failed. i was looking for "beta" followed by "ended" in my skimming, but they worded it differently. It says "While population and land slowly grew, Linden Lab released Second Life in June 2003" so ya, that could mean beta ended then.

i just know when i was in SL in 2006 people were still saying LL considered Second Life to be in beta... and.. it seems Adeon heard it even into 2009.. so! maybe that was just false rumours or jokes taking jabs at LL?

If they closed it as a beta game in 06, I'm gonna be pissed and demand my money back for getting hair stuck up my avatar's ass.

I say the same thing, I have my join date as 2008, but i had one of those 15 day trial accounts back in 2003....

Quit after a week of constant crashing and taking 10 minutes or more to cross a zone line convinced that the whole thing would be shut down by the end of the month!

This is because the name I use, the account that has been my main use account the longest, was started on October 4, 2009. My oldest existing account was started on April 21, 2004. I lost my beta account because I was goofing about with it, then got into playing EQ [1] with family all the time, so no time to poke around SL.

I knew right away when they went for the goth characters that we were in trouble.

I love when he complains about not being "compensated" for learning to jump, and does anyone really believe that guy does not LOVE looking at another man's penis?

Sadly, this probably is the future of SL. With a die hard gamer who has been spoon fed rules and strict guidelines, it might not be enough just to teach them how SL works. You are probably going to have to break them of a lot of misconceptions first. In many ways, a person who has never played a MMO has much better chance of figuring it all out..

I feel like this whole video is an insight into how to teach Gen Z.
Engaging content
Gamifying the lessons
Short, easy quests
Complex reward system with level ups and XP
Explain the goals early and often
