What drove you away from Roleplay?

The thread about text based escorting was sidetracked briefly to roleplaying. As i am very interested in roleplay in Second Life i would like to know more about "why things failed" for you.
So, please, write ahead. What do you dislike about roleplay in SL? what made you leave/avoid a roleplay area? or, when you were running a RP area, why did you close it?

The main thing that stops me from roleplaying in SL is that so many people are just there for the pixel sex. My definition of roleplay differs greatly from my definition of cybersex. I want D&D, not S&M, damnit!

I've never really been comfortable being something other than me. Even in games... Rules and settings change... My priorities, scruples and agenda may be different but I'm always a version of myself. I don't mind if people role play with me... As long as I don't have to.

Why I stopped running an RP area:

- It's a fulltime, thankless job.

- You have to pay some useless corporation in San Fransisco 300 US$ a month.

- When you tell someone that they're not allowed to use copyrighted characters in a fantasy sim, you get compared to everything from the antichrist to hitler.

- The fact that that copyrighted character is darth vader and he's wielding a laser blaster of course doesn't matter either. Everyone should know game of thrones would be much better with lasers (edit: our sim wasn't game of thrones btw, we wrote a custom setting based on real world). And anyone who disagrees is again the aforementioned lovechild of antichrist and hitler. Because FREEDOM! Fuck rules!

- These people aren't even joking. They're fucking serious and for some reason believe they're good roleplayers. They can all choke on dick for all I care.

Why I stopped RPing in public:

- Because other admins apparently don't care and let the above mentioned players run rampant on their sims.

- And even worse, some servers are even run by this type of players. I got no clue how a 14 year old can afford to spend 300 US$ a month on tier though. Unless they're dealing drugs. Which would explain their behaviour I guess.

Or you get their irritating little cousin (and/or Mary Sue).
The sort that want the best of everything without the weaknesses. For example, in a fantasy setting, a demonic elf vampire lycan who has super speed and can burst into a big hairy dog and special evil powers and keeps getting pregnant.

Though, for the sake of the discussion, I am still RPing.

Tired of the Mary Sue's (Inhandra stated it very well) and also because most places require HUDS to RP and I just totally suck at setting them up

I like text based RP, doesn't have to be lengthy paragraphs describing how you brushed your hand through your hair while eating a slice of pie mumbling.....but it has to be more then

oh and sex. Apparently if you don't sex it up in RP, you aren't RP'ing (at least the places I visited once upon a time).

I RP dark and dirty but will only go so far with RP'ing out a sex scene and I guess that's just not acceptable in many venue's.

I don't even bother with HUDs and meters. SL's system sucks for that kind of scripted shit.

Back in Neverwinter Nights, a game that was built for D&D, I didn't mind combining Questing/PvP/RP. But in SL that combination just doesn't work jack shit because of the system's limitations.

Seeing people perform a meter-based swordfight in SL always reminds me of this:

Lack of time. I'd love to RP, say, 2 hours a week... but it would feel very disjointed, and it also wouldn't be fair on other roleplayers.

If the group is big and with RL plans like the Star Trek RP group i was in that wanted to transform into an "official RL fan association"?...The biggest problem will be politics.

Drama...and more politics. SL Star Trek RP groups are in a sense a "conglomerate" of sims...each sim is a starship and the owner is normally the Captain normally with more or less authonomy to follow his own plot. That amongst other factors creates little "kingdoms", factions and so on.

And that is Starfleet alone...now add that a non-canon branch of Star Trek....the Marines where roleplay is basically being a 20th/21th century Marine in a 24th century Star Trek utopian United Federation of Planets. Obviously if you are hardcore Trekkie and so not into USA military this creates issues, especially concerning thre role of a Security Officer and a Marine.

Add that, backstabbing to climb a ladder and the previously mentioned "full time job aspect" it has when you are taking it serious and not really having fun...i had to quit.

I have never started to roleplay in Second Life.
I have been active in WoW (and sometimes want to be again) and I'm currently active in swtor. On a plain view, Second Life would be awsome to roleplay in. All the freedom, all the animations and options for characterdesign...far above what MMORPGs give to their players. Well...what keeps me away?
The barriers. I'm not relaxed, when I have to roleplay in English and therefore only german sims would be an option. Most english speaking roleplay communities are on another timezone anyway...
The people. I always felt like its harder to get decent people to play with in SL. So many people think they do roleplay but they are doing it with a horrible quality. There is less consent about what is acceptable and what not.
The roleplaysims itself. Gor, Gor...oh, did I mention Gor? Seems like there is nothing else to play or at least just a tiny minortiy of other themes. I'm also not sure how good it works, when the leading autority is a player.

Alts.
I dont mind alts, I have a couple for RP. What does bother me when someone has a legion of alts in heaps of opposing camps, starts up relationships and gets married etc...ruins planned attacks by passing on info - but never admits to their alts. It really gives me a nervous tick.

Bumlickers - who kissass to crawl their way up the RP ladder.

Cliques.

I could go on...and on...and on

Yes this this super this...

In my situation there was someone that was constantly getting banned for disruptive behaviour and returning with an alt.

He was always given a chance with every new alt and always crapped the whole forum.

Then rinse and repeat...

alts rescuing alts and rping afk prisoner rescues.

RP is about agreement. And unless you find like minded people who agree to agree then any RP will start drama and flounce off until someone tries again.

I usually roleplay me. Just using whatever i'm wearing at the time to slot me into the realm i'm rp'ing in. I just inhabit a role. I can't play someone else as i don't think like someone else.

Not found any like minded places that i enjoy enough to continue rp'ing.

I agree with all the sex and combat stuff though. I'm more than happy chatting in a bar getting slaughtered on ale as my RP style

RP sims need to contract. There are many sims with three or four people on them, two of whom are AFK.

The highly trafficked RP sims have established cliques and don't care to talk to you.

The regions I played in were sold and everything autoreturned mid roleplay back in 2008.
I wept a little, and went back home and built a sofa.
...And that was the end of RP and the beginning of PRIME.

What passes for RP. Little, pointless emotes about shallow, two-dimensional characters who have no drive or focus. A lack of plot outside of a PVP struggle. ANYWHERE with a meter combat system.

I've been table-top RPing for 25 years, I know how to RP. I have LARPed since the 90s, I know how to do a loose, freeform RP. I've RPed in IRC, I know how to do text RP. But despite all these skills, I can't seem to ever find a match in SL for RP.

But my friend seems to have tons of luck with RP, and I've had some good experiences once in a while. I keep hoping I'll find something/somewhere in SL for RP.

I am not entirely driven off from RP, but I haven't played in a set sim/rp since closing down the RP sim I co-owned. The reasons are manifold.

A> After Gossamer Gaslight shut down, I was disillusioned. It was a really heartbreaking decision, and there was a good bit of drama as well.

B> Each alt I have is a different character. I might not play any of them, and Beth might now be almost entirely OOC, but wrenching around who or what they are isn't easy for me at all. I've done it for a few, ones I got simply for the name, but Beth is one where she is what she is, which leads to point

C> I respect the right for anyone paying 300 dollars a month to make their rules, but too many sims nowadays don't want what Beth is. There are sims that allow furries and partial furries; except for any sort of cat, whether it is a neko or a full out cat morph. There are sims that are too focused on sex, and there are sims so focused on women being weak prey for menfolks. That's not my idea of RP, and so I just work on my store and stuff.

PS: And yes, I've been tabletop RPing since 1986, and would have been even longer if I'd had anyone to play with [like '78....]

What drove you away from Roleplay?

RP is everything I fear about social situations rolled into one event.

It's all the fear of giving a public speech, but throw in the requirement to adlib and respond to other's adlibs while still being interesting.

I can't nope any harder.

And that's just PG RP.

Make it about sex and the nope levels reach critical mass.

For me, the static nature of SL that kills the RP, being unable to impact the environment and surroundings directly, without a ton of planning (preparing every animation ahead, getting all the props, making sure the Admins are ok with the storyline).
It's all so bothersome that most end up sitting in the bar, doing nothing but chatting. No offence, but i never liked bars, not in RL either.

I actually miss Rp on IRC, where i could draw from my imagination directly, and the props were conjured instantly at the moment they were mentioned, and the environment shifted to the needs of the scene and rp.

For me, it wasn't so much about "getting out of" RP. It's just hard to find places that last very long.

Most of the time there just wasn't enough consistent traffic. The sim sat empty for hours, or people idled their avatars and went AFK.

One sim was really gorgeous, with lots of places to explore, but one RPer kind of dominated things and chased away everyone by basically acting like an ass, the mods did nothing to stop it, and people never came back.

Other sims, there is good consistent traffic but a very strong "clique" feeling among the existing players and they would simply ignore anyone not in that clique, or all hang out in IC areas that are off-limits unless you are already an IC member of that group/tribe/faction and have access.

I prefer emoting/written RP and really don't get into the heavy combat, high fantasy/magic or sex RP. . .which seem very popular among the furry/anthro crowd in SL.

I do still enjoy RP, and keep in touch with my good RP friends and we try to meet up and let each other know when we've found a place that allows anthro characters. Since I also have more realistic animal avatars I have considered joining sims that allow non-furry/anthro animals as long as they act like "real" animals. No clothes, no talking, etc.

But, I can't help it - I like my character and I wish I could find a place to RP with her.

I visited a urban/sword type RP sim years ago and just became a wall flower watching the others RP. I was not there 10 minutes before the whole sim screeched to a halt and a moderator was called in. Some overly muscle bound avatar was complaining about losing to a female avatar in a street sword fight. After that the sim was quiet with no one talking in open chat and I became bored and left.

Watching the above scene was amusing at the time, but did nothing to convince me to stay and roleplay.
