Description:
Yummy, and High Fructose Corn Syrup freeeeeee!
Other: Ingredients:
Time:
5 minutes
Difficulty:
Easy
Serving Size:
2 liters if you use 1 cup water and 2 cups of sugar
  1. 2 parts Sugar ( I use 2 cups of raw sugar)
  2. 1 part Water (I use 1 cup)
  3. Club Soda
  4. Flavoring (I use sassafras concentrate for the root beer replacing the water with it or a couple tbsps of vanilla extract for cream soda. You can find other flavorings at the store or you can use ginger in the syrup, the possibilities are endless)
Preparation:
  1. Clean your prep area! FFS what, were you born in a barn? Don't answer that. Do you have a funnel? A container to keep your syrup in? Do you have a pan? A measuring thingy? Do you have flavoring? Good, let's go.
Instructions:
  1. Put your water into the pan and boil it.
  2. Add flavoring
  3. Put your sugar in and boil one minute longer
  4. Take off heat and let cool for a few minutes
  5. Pour into a clean container and store in the fridge (you can keep it there for a week or two, remember no preservatives means it has a shelf life)
  6. Use 4 Tbsp per 8 ounces of club soda
  7. voila! Homemade soda!

a quick note on raw sugar

i've made soda too, i love homemade cherry soda yay woot yay

i wanted to talk a little bit about sugar, and i don't mean to derail here.

neth bought me a great book called what Einstein told his Cook late last year, i stayed up all night and read it on one gulp

What Einstein told his cook: kitchen ... - Google Book Search

that's a long url that shows you a page about how raw sugar is one step removed from refined sugar, and how what we're talking about is how many times it goes through a centrifuge.

the only thing i'd try to add to this recipe is the idea that sugar is just melted juice, and that in a solution like soda, i'd think that it doesn't matter so much.

i am NOT trying to discourage home soda makers, please see this as an addendum to the recipe

peace,

taco

Option B is to live anywhere outside of the US where the corn producers do not hold so much sway over congress. But I digress...I love this, thanks again!

No worries, it is just what I have on hand. I didn't mean to suggest it as the ONLY thing do to do... just that it works. I think raw sugar tastes a bit earthier than refined, and I like the turbanado sugar. Pretty much any thing really. It's all better than HFCS tbh... but it's still SUGAR. lol

I think I've mentioned this before, but I made rootbeer at one point. I used basic beer making equipment - 5 gallon carboy, various tubes and funnels, and beer bottles+a bottle capper. I got the ingredients from a local home brew supply place. I used a bit of yeast to carbonate the rootbeer, and I'm pretty sure that's where everything went terribly wrong.

It was delicious, but the bottles were about as explosive as really old TNT. They went off without any warning at all and had the impact of a small hand grenade. So, there I was, sitting down in a nice comfy chair, relaxing on a quiet evening, maybe reading a good book, when BOOOOOM! The entire house shook.

Scared the holy living bejesus out of me. Plus, cleanup was a bit of a chore. By "a bit" I mean the entire pantry was soaked in rootbeer and there were shards of glass buried in the sheet rock in the ceiling and walls. Not cool.

Don't let my explosive results deter you (I suspect they will encourage some of you). Making pop was a lot of fun, and the results were really tasty. Just watch the recipe carefully when it comes time to deal with the carbonation.

So, farting through a straw into a mason jar of orange juice is the wrong way?

Might work, but after certain types of food, it's risky.

Look what I saw an ad for recently?

Sodastream | Turn Water Into Fresh Sparkling Water And Soda

Certainly makes club soda easier to get, basically it carbonates the water using refillable canisters of CO2, and one of the larger canisters does about 110 liters of water! Since Alex and I have been making our own orange, grape, pineapple and cream sodas, this would be a great solution to the constant problem of having to buy seltzer.

Refilling the canisters might be a pain, but apparently they can be exchanged via the website and participating stores. I know they sell them at Kohl's but I'm not sure if they do the canister exchange.

Anyway... I want one

I want to try this. How strong should I make the flavoring though?

Really depends on the flavoring and what you prefer of course, naturally the best way to find out is to play around. But when we make our orange soda, we do 1/4 sugary syrup, 1/4 orange juice, and 2/4 with seltzer. Our seltzer we've been getting has been going flat really fast though, so it would be more like adding water with a tiny bit of actual bubbly
