Pushing boundaries

Just recently I was asked (for the first time) to enter my store in an upcoming store hunt. Whether or not the hunt proves beneficial to sales is irrelevant because just the acceptance started my creative juices boiling over.

I've started work on a Rosie the Riveter avatar, with the ambitious goal of making a complete package including the fashion outfit. The shape and custom skin are within my comfort zone, but moving into hair and clothing is not. I've made a few tentative stabs at those areas, but nothing of this complexity before.

I'm making a concession with a few sculpted components that are completely beyond my ability to provide. I plan on buying the sculpts for the scarf, shirt collar and cuffs, and work boots. Best of all, Carter Denja has offered to make a free perm pose that more closely approaches the familiar muscle clench pose. I'll be including that in the package so that it can be added to any AO.

Stage 1: I've finishing up the shape, skin and iconic headscarf. The scarf covers a combination of prim curls of hair and tufts of Linden hair, both of which are using my own custom hair textures.

Stage 2: Making the work shirt and work pants.

Wish me luck!

I this project and it is a huge honor to be involved in it.

Beebo: can you send me a copy of the shape so that I can tweak the pose to be just right on it? Poses can't be tweaked for all shapes but I may as well make this one perfect for the Rosie shape.

Me too - or maybe just buy the package when finished - you will be selling it too won't you Beebo?

I don't actually know the character but I have a vague idea she was used in the war in an Uncle Sam sort of way? We (Brits) had various inspirational images of Land girls (agriculture), Canary girls (munitions) and others but I'm not aware of any single identifiable figure(s)...

Anyway, looking forward to seeing the complete woman!

PS Googled Rosie - apparently the 'We can do' girl is popularly thought to be Rosie the Riveter but actually isn't - but hey, if that's who she represents in most minds then who cares

Last year it was called Stepping Stones, but I believe it will be renamed this year. Scheduled to start in early December.

Yes, I'll be putting it on sale after the hunt. I'm hoping it will have some staying power afterwards.

There are quite a few Rosie images, but the poster girl is probably the most well-known and it also has the most recognizable elements (like that polka-dot kerchief), so after reviewing all my reference photos I went with the "We can do it" version.

I totally love it so far. I have a bomber jacket with her on the back patch. Her face is AMAZINGLY true-to-form.

Haha, that's me in that picture, you'd never know. The draft of the pose I finished with last night is better than the one in that picture, closer to the iconic Rosie pose. We will make final tweaks to the pose when Beebo has finished her work on the clothes. This is the most awesomest project ever, I can't say enough times what a thrill it is to contribute to it.

OMG, it's amazing. Are her hand sliders all the way down? Maybe just a teensy bit bigger. Rosie is dainty but she isn't typical-Second-Life-girl-hand dainty! But seriously, she looks so killer. It looks like you're in the home stretch!

Thanks, and I'll check handsize tonight. I've started on the work shirt already, so I'm making faster progress than I expected.

Ooh exciting! That was a really good hunt the first time around and it's certain to be this time too. This avatar is such a cool project and you're both doing so well on your respective parts you can do it! hehe.

Working my way through the stage of the project. You know, the point where you're patting yourself on the back for how well everything is going and then.... it all seems to fall apart.

1) Decided I still didn't have the face right, then tweaked too much... started all over again with a new shape. (Like the result better.)

2) Shifted the skin tone away from pink and made the "final" skin... then wore it in a few different light situations and realized I'd gone too far. Needs to be re-done.

3) Was hollering hurrah over finishing the work shirt... and realized I totally overlooked how the front seams would mesh with a prim collar. Still working on that....

Recreating such an iconic, well known character can be daunting, but you are doing a fabulous job. Kudos!!!
