Rebuilding my store (again)

Well, I tend to rebuild my store every 6 months or so. It's addicting.

I made the build in Blender and imported it with prim.builder. I then swapped some of the normal prims for megaprims. I am texturing it now, mostly with custom-made textures.

The last pic shows yesterday's situation, it has changed a bit since: the ceiling is now white, and I've textured the light path section (although that's going to change again, as I'm not happy with the shading).

Here's the current advancement of the store. I've set up a few boxes already to get a feel of how it's going to look like.

I decided to make my own furniture for the store, so that I can control the size, the poses, the colour, and so on. I've made a vinyl love-seater and have put two conversational poses in it. I'll add a "cuddle" pose and a shadow, and depending on how it turns out, I will consider selling it. For now, it's exactly the right colour and at only 6 prims, it won't overburden the sim.

I've also taken a screenshot of what the building looks like in Blender. I find it easier to align prims, and overall it's faster to build. The downside is that it's a bit more difficult getting a sense of scale. I work with a picture of my land in the background, so I'm not completely out of whack, but it's still a bit larger than I thought. Overall it's less buggy than SL, and there's no rubber band effect!

Hawt! Oh, and the building is neat, too. I didn't know you could do that Blender/primbuilder thingy you're talking about.

Looking good
I love the vinyl sofa. I too was not aware you could build in blender and import it. The scale thing would be a problem for me though. I have enough trouble with scale in world without having to build on the fly and then import. I have lost count of the builds I have done that have had to be torn down and re-done when I realised the scale was askew.

Your build looks very impressive. Am loving the interior. It looks crisp and modern, everything I love in a store build. Keep us updated

OMFG *you* like my build? I admire your builds! I think I actually learned most of what I know by looking at builds made by you and a few other designers.

About prim.builder:

It takes some getting used to. Cut / hollowed prims are bugged. I find it great for laying out the general structure of a build -- snap snap snap, work by numbers, it's accurate! And you can turn around the build, hide some prims, zoom in without the camera sending you three sims away...

The other advantadge is that you have a copy of your build on your hard drive. You can export it as a group to .obj, and if you're smarter than me you can bake the textures properly (accurate shadows).

I have baked the textures of my wrestling ring with that method.

It's definitely worth a try -- if only for the magic of watching the build rez for the first time!
The link to the importer is in Jeffrey Gomez' picks.

Thanks for the link .... I'm going to check it out and probably give it a try. Who knows, I might just take to it. I can see one advantage in that I could build away without actually being in SL. The second I start building in SL you can bet that IM's start flooding in .... I swear there is an alarm goes off or something LOL.

ZOMG I'm tired!

It's been a while. I'm the queen of procrastination: the store has been actually active for a few weeks now, but I got carried away with building my ice-skating rink and frozen fishing spot area. I had three prims or so to fix, and didn't get around doing it until a couple of days ago.

So well, apart from the solar panel at the top, it's done. I hope.

The view from above:

I'm very happy with the ceiling, lol!

I love building, and now that I'm getting the hang of texturing, I'm afraid I'll spend more time in the sandboxes.

Looking great Raindrop. I especially love the contrast between the two wood types on the floor, and the shading on the lighter 'pathway' is uber cool. I have also realised that I have never been to your store so next time I am in world I have determined to visit and see it in all it's new glory
